ASUS P8Z77-V USB woes

Hi all,

I figured I'd make a "buyers beware" post: the P8Z77-v Pro board I had for the last 13 days had USB issues, and it seems to be an issue many people are having. In my case, the board would not recognize my mouse until I disconnected and reconnected it - this happened in the BIOS, in Linux and in Windows. Windows reported an error 43 with the mouse, so it recognized it but encountered some issue - I suspect the mouse not being powered up.

Either way, Raja on the hard forums basically said they had no idea what was wrong, and a solution would take weeks to months. Other USB issues reported on the same forums as well, not just limited to mice.

I returned the board and jumped to a MSI GD65 which works flawlessly, while costing less.

Either way, wanted to make this known.

Thanks,
RA

Probably a messed board.

I will point out that in my original post, I mentioned other people reporting this issue, and that an ASUS representative (Raja) basically confirmed it was a firmware and possibly driver issue. It's faulty firmware, and ASUS didn't do enough testing before releasing it.

The 1015 UEFI/BIOS is said to improve USB compatability.
I have had no problems with USB or anything else on my P8Z77 V Deluxe.

Look at how complicated the mother board is... It's a wonder that it works "AT ALL"

so you're down a few usb ports, we should just get over it. :D

Down a USB mouse :)

I had installed the bios from last week, and it did not fix the issue. Too late to try anything further on my end, since I returned the board.

I love how the IB cpus were delayed but not the mobos -- looks like the mobos should have delayed too and used that extra time for QC.

Dunno, my GD65 seems fine. The intel high end board though, from reviews, didn't look to be in a good state either.

The one good thing to come of this, is redoing my SSD to use a GPT instead of MBR. :D

I have read that some other mobos have USB ports that are not connected to the Intel chipset but a different USB controller. Often causing errord until you get drivers in windows and even then...sometimes bad luck.

Could this be the issue as well? I assume you tried other ports?

Yup, most boards are using an ASMEDIA controller. I tried both the Intel and ASMEDIA controllers, no luck.

I also tried the USB2 ports. Still, no luck.

Zero issues on my Pro with lots of different USB devices on both the Intel and ASMedia ports, on both the I/O panel and front panel connectors.

I really wanted to go with Asus as I have always been Supermicro and Intel for stability reasons.
But went with the X58A-GD65 from MSI and have had 100% percent stability with a minimal OC on air.
The Asus parallel RAM trick Anand S. reported on got me excited as my apps use massive RAM, and the idea it isn't in series now seemed exciting although nobody ever tests my apps on review sites.
I will watch for 2 more months and if Asus is releasing then fixing like I hear about from so many early adopters, I'll stick with MSI.

So thanks to all here for checking out these boards and reporting.
The days of QC seem long gone for manufacturers across the pond.
I guess regulating Wall Street doesn't work and Asus obviously doesn't have an Internal Affairs bureau....
