When you install Win 7 it creates its own MS sound entry (Hi Def Sound Dev) in Dev Man, then when you add the Realtek HD drivers, it adds that one. Make sure the Realtek is "this device is working properly", then make generic disabled. Reboot.
Make sure you do install RT HD drivers and set RT in bios to HD (NOT AC97) and same HD for front panel. I am using 6.01.6299 1-25-2011 fwiw.
Make sure you have HD connector from fron panel to mobo, not AC97 to co-ordinate with bios front panel settings!!
If no front panel - disable in bios.
I am also using Win 7 SP1 dunno if that helps.
Set power options to "performance" and put everything in advanced on max
You might wanna check out the other post and note my file association thingy carefully and the codec link.

And also note there the "use this device" at bottom in speakers properties/general
I assume you are not getting any Windows sounds?
Could it be the ohms load your speakers presented to the green output? 4-8-16-32?
Have you tried running the cable to a stereo receiver tape input first then to speakers?
Do the speaker sound tests work?
Are you using a Single 3.5mm minijack stereo connector to the green port only?
I might also mention in passing that the WMP with Win 7 wont play files converted to AVI or WMV, whilst WMP 11 plays them fine. I tried to revert to WMP 11 after disabling WMP 12, but it wont let me. I download a lot of youtube music videos and my downloader does the converting (flv) to wmv or avi and they play video but no sound because they are not ORIGINAL wmv or avi. So I use KMplayer, or GOM player with the black deluxe skin - both will play anything thrown at them, both are freeware. I wouldnt use WMP to test any sound prob, thats fer sure.
But this is a whole nuther topic.
I already did all these things and every conceivable combination thereof. No sound.
The speakers are normal cheap pc speakers that have worked for ages, they still work in any other computer, laptop or desktop, I tried with other speakers as well. I tried playing several audio files, but my primary test file is the Kalimba.mp3 sample file that comes with Windows 7. It should work fine. No, I don't hear any Windows sounds or any other sounds. No sound at all. The Windows mixer shows that sound is being played on its equalizer display, but no sound is heard.
I wrote on the ASUS forum. I hope someone from the company will answer.
