Hi all,

Just building my first PC in 5 years, definately in need of an upgrade, just a bit stuck on the mobo for a C2D 6400, i've whittled dit down to either

ASUS P5W DH Deluxe or Gigabyte 965P S3

any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I'm not into overclocking although might have a little go but nothing drastic, will be using PC as a DAW mainly, and general web design/office type stuff (photoshop prob biggest app), but no games, would like flexability and reliability above all. My full working 'draft' is like this

INTEL Core 2 Duo 2,13Ghz E6400 FSB1066 S.775 2MB
ASUS P5W DH Deluxe or Gigabyte 965P S3
PCI-e 256MB NVidia GeForce 7300 LE TV-out & DVI
SATA-II 300 GB MAXTOR 6V300F0 (7200rpm-16MB)
DDR-II RAM 2056MB CORSAIR 533MHz CL4
550W LC-Power LC6550H 12cm

any problems with that setup?

Thanks people.

The DS3 is a better choice. P5W-DH is a top board but unless you're using a 6600+ and need SLI you're spending $140 too much.

After checking out a comparison at Gigabyte site they seem almost exactly the same..so so far so good, just another couple of quick questions,

Would you recommend Maxtor,Samsung or Western digital SATA hard drives?

Also is the Corsair 533mhz RAM going to hinder the speed much?

Thanks again for your time.

Hey brown11

i did alot of research on the difference between DS3 and S3 already and there really isnt much except S3 has newer marvell ethernet chip and DS3 has different capacitors on motherboard that dont matter unless u plan on keeping the board for more that 3-4 years. here are the links to my research

Hope this helps!!

P.S. Agree with Pabster... if you decide to go with 4mb cache conroe go with asus.

Thanks for the help.

I would like some help on the RAM though

Is 5233Ghz OK for this chip & mobo? or will it slow it down too much?

Cheers

Why the asus if you're going with a 4mb conroe? Also, if you're going with a 6600 etc would that patriot memory not be the best choice still?

Also, is there any way to get http://wiki.p5wdh.de/ in English? It seems like a wealth of info but I can't read it. I know, I know... stupid American.

The E6600 (4Mb cache) and higher procs are overclocking higher on the P5W DH mobo whereas the E6300 & E6400 (2Mb cache) are overclocking better on the 965 mobos. Thats the early results so far. It could change with more BIOS updates though. This the main reason why people are reccomending the P5W DH & 4Mb cache chips. The E6300 & E6400 will run fine on the P5W DH. Just not getting as high of a overclock.

So is there any reason to get the P5W if you are not running a E6600 and not running SLI?

How much more of an OC do you get with the lower end cpus by not choosing the P5W? I'm considering getting a 6400 now and then upgrading once the prices slip down and some new cpus come out early-mid next year so would I be better off getting the P5W and sacrificing whatever OC difference there is?

Well, the 570 mobos have more features typically than the 965s. So that may be one reason why you may want a P5W DH over a DS3 as an example. I personally wanted the features of the P5W DH and at the time of order it seemed to look more stable in my eyes than the DS3. The mobos are getting better BIOSes now so which one ends up the better for OCing is still up in the air. The E6600 isnt turning out to be the OCing dream many had hoped for. I dont think we'll know the full story on what mobo is best with what chip for sure until the 590s roll out and see if they allow some higher overclocks. For all we know the Intel chips could end up like the AMD chips whereas the lower end chips are a better bang for buck for overclocking. Then again the higher end chips with their unlocked multipliers may prove the better in the end. Only time will tell.

The E6400s are OCing to about 3.2-3.4 and the E6600s are hitting 3.4-3.6/3.7ish. This is with aircooling and stable 24/7 overclocks (which is what I'm interested in). This is changing almost daily though as newer BIOSes come out for the various mobos and users continue to test and push. Watercooling is getting higher OCs. At least this is what I been reading anyway.

Hi,

Seems to me the original comparison is wrong.

The S3, DS3 and even the DS4 would line up against the Asus P5B. S3 vs P5W turns into a debate over 975 vs 965, and in particular whether you want to run mutliple graphics cards.
