An ASUS Tech Support Rep told me over the phone that if it would not boot a Conroe using BIOS 0501 (what most ship with) and that they would send me a preflashed BIOS chip that would for free. I have yet to receive the chip but I'm sure it will be here well before my E6600 at the rate things are going.

for those of you who got a new chip for the p5w - did the tech support require a s/n or anything to prove you already have the board? i want to get it early so i don't have to wait after the board comes...

I can't even get in touch with tech support.

Called them on Thursday, computer said wait time was 5 minutes. Waited for 25, then finally somebody anwsered but said that all technicians were busy, and took my phone number saying they would call me back that night.

Friday came with no call, so in the afternoon I called again. Waited about 5 minutes this time, then somebody came and said the same thing. Took number again, but no call back.

Tried calling Saturday, but not open.

My motherboard and processor are both arriving on Tuesday (hopefully). I'm going to be really ticked off if everything is working but then I have to wait a few days for a new bios chip, especially because it could have been sent out on Thursday if they would have called me back or anwsered the phone.

i called after i got the board, and tech support said the bios dept was closed or something. just keep on trying - there must be a lot of people trying to get a new chip right about now. also you might get lucky and find you have a board with the latest bios.

my system is 6600 , p5w dh deluxe , team xtreem 6400 , 2x raptors .... i m afraid that i have some faulty hardware? or it is only a flashing newer bios to solve the problem ?

Do any of you actualy OWN this board you are talking about? (I do).

(1) to the guy talking about revisions 303 / 304... that has to do the the INTEL BadAxe board, NOT the asus board

(2) The bios chip on the P5W DH is on a raised socket. You CAN pop it in and out quite easily and safely and people ARE getting bios chips sent from ASUS if the one theirs shipped with has too old a version of the bios for them to post.

(3) 701 should work for most Conroe chips ENOUGH to post and get you into the BIOS. The x6800s are supposedly a bit more finicky and may need 901-903. The most current version of the BIOS that I'm aware of is 1101.

I've run 1101 on my e6400 very nicely. Mine came with 0502 when I got it, but I then stepped through all the upgrades (they had a lot in the last few weeks) while waiting for the e6700, using my older P4 single core chip.

If you get the mobo and can't even get into the BIOS (DO install your CPU and memory), then call ASUS and ask for an upgraded bios (assuming you don't have another 775 socket chip lying around). You will need to make a floppy/cdrom/or USB key with the newer bios on it (plain file -- doesn't need to be a bootable disc)
