I agree CraigRT; I may never go back to AMD again! It's a very powerful but basic board. If you don't need firewire or Raid etc; but want to OC moderately; It's Grrrreat.

Id like to pair a 630 P4 with this board. What is the most effective cpu cooler to use. Id like to push this cpu up to 3.6ghz. Thanks.

I still like AMD, but the one system I've got here (based on the P5P800) has a 3.4 P4 and a WD Raptor.. it really flies. It doesn't have anything special for video (since it's a workstation) but it really rips... it seems stable too.

Hello Everyone !

I just bought an Asus P5P800 mobo and a 3.0GHz proc. Got them both for $300. I plan to build / upgrade from my current Asus P4T mobo (which I still love). I want to use my current PSU - an Enermax 380watts, but after reading this thread, I think I may need to upgrade the power. I plan to have 6 IDE devices ! - 3 hard drives, a dvd burner, a dvd rom, and a cd-rw. ( just picked up 2 Seagate 160 gig drives for $94 )

I am curious as to which video card you have Notquite.

Crane: Sorry I was away from home for 10 days, and didn't see your post til now....
WELCOME to AT forums.

I'm not into gaming so use a basic vid card. ATI Radeon 9250

With all the extras you are going to use, I would suggest a more skookum power supply. With my P5P I have been getting an occassional 'major failure' error message and a auto reboot. I suspect it is because the 380w is not quite cutting it. I just installed a OCZ 450w last evening; and will see if the error messages go away.

I've had all the same problems - sort of. I got it all at Fry's. But the mb just didn't work. They told me it was the wrong heatsink, so we got the Jungle512. It worked for 7 months except once a couple months ago it went off for no reason and wouldn't come back on. We let it sit a day and then tried turning it on, and it went on fine and was working great until a couple weeks ago. It went off again and wouldn't go back on. Waited a day, still didn't work. Had my Dad look at it (he builds computers) - couldn't figure it out. I took it to Fry's. They charged me 70 to look at it. Determined that the power supply was "bad" which caused the motherboard to "fry." The power supply they originally recommended was a 350w. The first time it had a problem we asked if maybe the power supply was the problem and they said it definitely wasn't. This time they just said that it was bad, not that it had too little power. So we replaced the motherboard and got a new power supply (another 350w). We put it all together and we had no video. We took out the video card, put it back in, whala video. Loaded up fine. Yay there's my pretty desktop background. We turned it off, closed the case, etc. Turned it back on. It said my primary slave hd was bad. f1 to resume. Tried f1. Nothing. Restarted, tried to enter setup. Wouldn't accept that we were pressing del incessantly. Kept trying to restart and either enter setup or f1, but nothing. We thought the keyboard wasn't plugged in, but it had just worked earlier and it was plugged in, and the screen said it was working. Then all of a sudden it went off and wouldn't go back on. Checked everything AGAIN. After awhile we got it to go on again but no video. And all this time, no beeps. I'm really fed up at this point. I spent 70 for them to figure out what was wrong, and they obviously did a bad job of that. And the new power supply is pointless. Do you think all along it just needed more wattage? And don't you think they would have figured that out early on instead of RECOMMENDING the 350w? This is my third mb, and I'm going postal!

Thank you Notquite.

I have all my hardware except for:

1. power supply (im thinking about getting Thermaltake TR2 W0070 ATX 430W Power Supply).
2. ram (just about fully decided on Corsair XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM) the corsair configurator suggested this one.

I have read as much as I can on the forums, seems like Thermaltake is not at the top of most peoples list, do you know why ?

My video card is an ATI AIW Radeon 8500DV, which I do not believe is a power hog.
Also, I am currently running x6 drives on my Enermax 380watt.
But I am convinced that I need a bigger PSU after reading the forums here.

Going to Colorado for vacation this Saturday, so it will delay my pc for at least another week.
I will keep y'all updated !

an update..

took it back to fry's and they said too little power, said i should go with a 420.. the manager of the service dept said that at least. so we got it. they put in a new motherboard and cpu as well. ran last night just fine. i was running it this morning for only 5 to 10 minutes and it went off again, wont come back on. i have a cdrw drive, a dvdr drive, and two hd's. im beginning to think its not the power at all. it ran fine 7 months with less and ten minutes with more it cant handle.

I've just purchased this board and a new case from newegg and I just wanted to know is there anything important that I should be aware of when installing this board? I'm switching over from a crappy Gigabyte board but my components are as follows:

Pentium 4 530 3.0ghz (Stock Heatsink)
2Gb Corsair Dual Channel (2-3-3-6)
120gb Pata HD
BFG 6800GT OC (stock)
DvD/CdR Drive
PCI Wireless Network Card
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS (Gamer's Edition)
480 W Antec TruePower

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

PS. As far as the auto OC options for the board, Are they self explanatory or do I have to input the modifiers manually?

ELKY:
Sorry for the delay in answering... I just got back from a few weeks away for an open heart 'bypass' operation.

I would think your components will be okay with the P5P800. You probably already know this with the 2 weeks between your question and my answer.

The aibooster is pretty simple really. You can use the RED NOS button and set for 10% ; etc. or use the 'tuning' icon ('open-end wrench') I just use the NOS button myself.
Below the CPU utilization bar graphs there are a row of push btn's... 2nd from the left gives access to another list of OC'g levels.

Lo Folks,

I just got my new pc up and running. This is only about the 10th pc I ever put together, and although it was easy, I still ended up cursing Micro$. Someone just has to come up with a better OS. I feel my hardware loose power once I install that piece of s-oftware.

Anywho, the motherboard is a real beauty. So far every machine I have built sported an Asus mobo. I thought the placement of the secondary IDE channel was a bit odd, but it turned out for the better. I have 2 hard drvies sitting at the bottom of my case, right next to it. The only thing I can wish for now is a really short IDE cable just to get rid of some clutter. And the mobo has enough usb connections for me to finally use the usb ports on the face of my Lian Li 68 case !

The only thing I do not like about the mobo is the onboard sound. I went with it because it seems almost all mobos sport onboard sound these days. I am still sound testing, but I think I will put my old Soundblaster Live Platnimun with Live Drive in.

Onto the power supply - NeoPower 480. Did I get a bad one ? It sounds like a tiny hair dryer. And the damn thing is hot ! It only has 1 fan (my old Enermax has 2) and I couldnt tell if the damn thing was blowing air in or out ! I actually put a piece of paper to see if it would get blown away from the fan or toward it. My case fan is right under the powersupply, so I am thinking maybe it is disrupting the air flow. I need to test. However, I am not at all happy with the NeoPower. I wish I could return it to NewEgg.

Ram - I just got 1 gig of plain old Corsair Value Select. And it works ! You see, last build, I payed dearly for 512 meg of Mushkin Enhanced Rimms (Asus P4T mobo), and I was not about to spend all that cash on ram again.

Cpu - I had a 2.4 on my P4T, and now I have a 3.0 with hyperthreading. Whats the difference ? I can't tell. I kinda knew I wouldn't see that much of a performance boost, but I was expecting to see something. And to be honest, I am really considering not selling my P4T mobo, Mushkin rimms and 2.4 proc. That setup ran damn fine.

In conclusion - I feel like I wasted alot of money. I don't see that much of a performance boost and the power supply is loud and hot.
The only thing keeping me from rebuilding my P4T is having to return all the new hardware, and another rebuild of all my software.

_________

Hope your doing ok notquite.
How is the new ps doing for you ?

I am using the OCZ450 power supply. Adequate power and fairly quiet.
Have you tried to Over-clock with the NOS yet ?? It is so simple. I'm at 3.451 Ghz (15%) on a P4 530J (3.0 Ghz) I certainly noticed a performance boost over my AMD Bartons. I like the P5P800 so much, I'm ordering another to replace my PC4- KM2M.

No, I have not tried to OC. I didnt see much of a performance boost going from a 2.4ghz to a 3.0ghz, so I dont want to risk damage to go from 3.0ghz to 3.4ghz.

What exactly is the gain supposed to be with hyperthreading ? More programs running at the same time ?

I disconnected the chasis fan to see if it was disrupting the NeoPower Supply fan, but it wasn't. What I did find out is that the NeoPower fan I believe is just to cool off the components inside, not to expel hot air out the back. Thats why I couldnt tell if the fan was blowing in or out.

Yes; hyper threading allows 2 major CPU intensive programs to run simultaneously; kind of a "poor-mans" dual cpu; and not as effective as dual CPU's, or the new dual core CPU's. I run SETI@Home on 1 thread and the OS and backround programs on the other thread.
If you OC using the NOS; you won't likely damage the CPU. It is only OC'g when there is a demand for the CPU cycles; eg running SETI@Home, or large number crunching programs; video etc. When the demand for CPU cycles is over; the OC'g drops back to the normal CPU value.

I have not checked out NOS, in fact I don't know anything about it. But maybe I will. I may need it for Battlefield 1942 😛

Do you have headphones hooked up to your P5P800 ? If so, what color connector did you hook it up to ? I'm guessing the yellow RCA line in would be the one to use. But then I need a stereo to RCA converter, because I never saw headphones with RCA at the end.

I don't use headphones, but if I did, I think I'd plug them into the the light green audio jack. The normal spot for speaker 'out' hookups. I don't really worry about the sound capabilities of the mobo. I'm totally deaf on the left ear, so don't hear in stereo anyway.

On page 1-3 of the user guide at the bottom of the page there is a short explanation of NOS. You need to activate it in the BIOS setup as on page 4-20. On page 4-18 set AI overclock tuner to [AI NOS] I set my NOS Mode to[heavy] and the turbo NOS to [overclock 15%] If you're concerned about damage to the CPU, start at 5% and work up until it becomes unstable. I tried 20% but it wouldn't go that far. Auto reboot and back to the [disabled] setting; but it is stable at 15%. If you're a gamer then you might see an advantage in the OC'g.

Ya, I am reading the manual but I'm still not to sure, I just got to experiment. I am using the green audio out for my speakers. That leaves the only other audio out being the yellow RCA. I may run to radio shack today to get a stereo mini plug-to-RCA converter.

I will test out that NOS, why not. As soon as I install Battlefield 1942.

I really like the mobo, but all said, I think I should have stayed with my P4T (which I just put on Ebay).
And the Antec NeoPower is dang loud ! and I wish it had 2 fans.
My old Enermax 360 watt had 2 fans and I didnt hear it at all.

I got the Stereo mini plug to RCA converter jack, but I can not get the S/PDIF output to work.
I get no sound when I connect my speakers or my headphones.
When I do hook something into the S/PDIF out, the little configurator doesn't even pop up.

I just upgraded my sound drivers from Asus but still no go.

Do you get sound out of the S/PDIF out (yellow connector in back of the mobo) ??

No. Not sound that you can get directly from speakers. S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface. That will connect your PC to a home theater audio amplifier; or a digital recorder (DAT),or some of the new Sony Grand Wega HDTV's have the S/PDIF input; etc.
A digital stream would be fed from the PC to the Audio amp. and would come out of the speakers connected to the audio amp. S/PDIF is useless, unless you have a sound system that has a S/PDIF input; and the coaxial cable to go between them.

Well, I had some time to work with my new setup.
I installed the SoundBlaster Live card.
I tried NOS, and it seems to help out although I am not too demanding of my pc.
The Q Fan works, but I noticed the cpu ran a tiny bit hotter, so I dont use Q Fan.
Most of the noise I was hearing was the cpu fan, not the NeoPower.

All said, I still think my Asus P4T with the 2.4 cpu ran quicker. I also had 512 meg of Mushkin Enhanced Rimms in it,, which is now sadly on Ebay.

I was wondering if the onboard lan on the P5P800 uses up more cpu cycles than if I put my Intel nic card in.
What do you think ?
