ASUS P5N-T Deluxe 780i SLI

Sorry to let some of you guys down but i ditched the ASUS and ordered a MSI P35 Neo2-FR. Firstly, it costs a mere 90E compared to the very expensive 250E Asus. Second, I don't like it when something i buy doesn't work the way it should, especially when it's out of the box, and even more especially when it costs this much. Managed to pull out a 200E price for it on a bidding site, could have got 220 but i simply had enough of that board. It's been trouble ever since i got it. And THIRD and MOST IMPORTANT, the OC potential of the P35 skyrockets compared to most of the more expensive boards. I read a review (here at Anandtech.com) that concluded that the MSI P35 Neo2 does just as well as the P5K3 (hope i got this right 😛) except it's not so "pimped up". Best price/performance i've ever seen. As for the BIOS version... i feel sorry i sold it right in the day of a new version launch... F#%^! I blame it on the update tool, which completely sucks because it never told me of a new version, even though i've even searched for updates THIS MORNING!

Edit: I don't think i'm going to get a SLi sistem up and running any time soon. Firstly i can't afford it right now, secondly, it doesn't make much of a difference for me since i use OpenGL. Right now, it's more than i need. I'm interested in shaving off seconds from the rendering time, not gain more FPS. I'm not much of a gamer myself, i mainly use 3D and CAD software. (3D Studio Max 2008, AutoCAD 2008, CATIA v5, ArchiCAD and many others) Buuut... Assassin's Creed kinda got me going 😛

@Cheex - No offence, as far as i know, "being left-handed" is just a figure of speech:laugh:. Please don't take everything i say in serious because i like to joke a lot. As for the PCI-x issue, DX10 makes sure that your graphics card fully saturates everything you've got on the sistem 😀 So yes... Pci-x 1.0 is falling short in front of the 2.0 version when it comes to quality&performance, but i'm not sure this stands for DX9 too. If anyone has more info please post because i still have a few doubts.

See you guys on this thread and throughout the forum. Switching boards doesn't mean switching friends. If you want, i can keep you up to date to a comparison of the 780i vs P35.

Later edit: Guys, do you think that DFI LanParty UT P35-T2R is a better choice?

Offense...??...offense....What's that?.....😕

There was none taken my friend. I was also joking about the fact that I'm a leftie and had no problems....😀

PS: I am ambidextrous but I tend towards my left...😛

Hey dudes,

The official 0903 bios is now on the Asus website. I just flashed my own. Funny thing is, after the reboot, my Q6600 was listed as already OC'd to 3.0Ghz even though the previous bios was on Standard settings... When I went into the new bios, the CPU was still listed as 3.0Ghz even though it was still sitting on Standard...

Anyways, that was the first odd thing so far..... right now, I am running at 3.0Ghz after upping my FSB to 1330 with 3:2 memory ratio.

Current idle with 1.33v 23C! NICE

Very interesting. I have had that bios for a few days now but haven't used it yet.

Any idea why the "free" overclock?

Wait a minute... are you saying that you get 3.0GHz as STANDARD for q6600? no problem hitting 3.0 with 1.33V. I hit 3.2@1.32V... however, my temps are a bit high... 35/35/31/31 idle... with Tuniq 120... and AS5. I reseated it today since i got the new board and i think i'm going to have to do that again if this doesn't drop according to Arctic Silver guide.

I think as an explaination for the free OC you could say ASUS wanted to show it can be done on their boards. 780i and asus still not a bright combination though... as far as i've seen, at least.

Well, unfortunately, I did not boot all the way into XP after seeing it POST at 3.0Ghz - I just went directly back into BIOS to see why it was saying that, but from what I saw, everything was at standard 2.4 settings.

So who knows at this rate. If you guys update to 0903, let me know if you see something funky, cuz as soon as I rebooted after the flash, it went to the ROMSIP screen saying a new CPU was detected....

I'm currently at 3.0Ghz at 1.33v and my idle is 30 and below on all cores - but I haven't tried stressing anything yet. I'm positive it will BSOD in the first 30 seconds like always, so I'm not even going to bother.

My car just went into the shop, so there's no way I am getting an EVGA now, so gots to live with the p5n-t.

Let's see if it's true 3.0GHz or if it's just an illusion. Download CINEBENCH 10 and tell me what score do you have. If you have around 10k at xCpu test, then it's the real deal. Btw, i'm at 3.0 myself right now, at 1.29V but my temps are way higher than what you stated. Sounds fishy.

P.S. Sorry about your car, sucks to make some plans then have them screwed up by things like this

Well that's what I'm saying, I never did go into XP after the flash...I went directly into BIOS where even there it said it was at 3.0Ghz, but the OC options were on Standard and nothing was actually overclocked, so I manually OC'd up to 3.0Ghz, 890 RAM 1333 FSB and rebooted.

I'll never know if the original 3.0Ghz I saw during the POST was real or just a bug, prolly just a bug.

Yeah, my temps are pretty damn good for 3.0Ghz, eh, I'm very happy with this Scythe Zipang cooler - Lots of nice copper heat pipes and a nickel plated copper base.

I don't know what's wrong with my temps... Tuniq 120 isn't bad at all, i simply don't know WHY my temps are so high. But i've noticed something... from 2.4 to 3.0, temps only rised 2-3 degrees, never passes 48-50C in full load (4xOrthos, 1/core just to make sure)

PS, this is a little off-topic. I have the same DDR as you, is it stable at 890 with those timings? (Corsair Twin2x2048 XMS2 DHX Cooler 5-5-5-15... only i have 2x1gb instead of 2x2gb... well, almost the same DDR as you 🙂)

I've yet to stress test with 0903 and my new settings, so I'll have to get back to ya. But with my lack of success so far, most likely I'll be dropping back down to 800Mhz, unlinking and going for a small OC.

Good news with the new BIOS!

10 times more stable! My load temps at 3.0Ghz never got higher than 52C on any core. FSB 1333, RAM at 890Mhz. Not a single bsod or lock up using OCCT as well as 4 instances of Prime95....I ran over 20 minutes on each...I'm impatient, I know that's not long or a true test of stability, but it's a huge increase over my previous attempts....I failed or crashed within 30 seconds on anything before the flash.

Only time will tell....

Hey guys, I flashed mine to the new 0903 bios.

I will post again with results as they come in.

**crosses fingers**

Any luck Cheex?

I've been running strong at 3.0Ghz all day now, played a bunch of Stalker: SOC, was CNTL ALT DEL'ing in and out of the game, which used to bsod it immediately, but not anymore. My stress testing is still stable too.

Looks like 0903 was the bios for me.

I just made the most stupid thing someone could do... i went to the guy i sold the mobo to and tried my old components, after talking with him, of course. Flashed the new BIOS 0903. Stable at 3.3GHz @ 1.36V.... didn't have time to test some more but this has got to be the worst period of my life. However, with the current mobo i have, MSI P35 Neo2-FR, i keep it at 3.2GHz stable at 1.28V... It's like saying goodbye to a very old friend...

Schizoid, the rams are perfectly stable at ddr915 (that's what i tried so far), at 5-5-5-15 and i'm sure they can go higher (stock voltage btw, 1.80V). At least on this board they are 😛 I'll do some further testing but 'till then, i'll go get some sleep. (Edit: nice case, looked it up on Thermaltake, i just noticed it. Congrats 😉 )

Thanks, I didn't know I had gotten the model with the huge side window fan (it really is massive) when I bought it. That was a nice surprise, and then I added another 120mm intake on top of the one in the front, then an 80mm exhaust at the top of the case.

Lots of airflow.

I'll go for 3.24Ghz tonight when I get home.

Well damn.

Crysis crashed on me last night, but I think it was my video cards locking up and not a system crash. They were OC'd to 800Mhz each and I forgot to adjust the fan speeds. lol, whoops

So bios 1001 is out now, I flashed and the exact same thing happened as last time, a new CPU was detected upon reboot.

This time I went into Windows to see if I was really getting an OC for free, lol, and there it was. It's detecting my CPU at 1333FSB and Ram is at 800 Mhz. I didn't change a damn thing, and before I flashed I was at all stock settings - standard.

Weird to say the least.

Well, i guess there's not really much left to say... Overall, this is a pretty shitty board. Not sure why. Neither ASUS or nVidia ever made a board such as this. Getting it stable is a craps shoot. Some say it's ASUS, some say it's nVidia... Judging by the fact that XFX and eVga managed to come up with rock-steady mobos make me think that ASUS rushed things a little with this one.

Just my opinion though, both as a user and a member of this forum.

There's one thing i can't seem to figure though... Why the hell can't it be stable with 8-phase full digital PWM's and 16 mosfit's??

Edit: And what's up with the weird OC? What, it's just Bundled there? Asus screwed up big time with this one and i'm pretty sure they realised that. 2 Bios versions in one week. NICE! 😀
Oh and one more thing... Have you tested 1001 for stability issues? i mean OC-wise, in Bios.

Could be your CPU.. Was it able to do better before?

Actually no.

My Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Rev. 3.3, F10 Bios....maxed out at 450FSB, anything higher wasn't stable. I did however, boot into Windows as high as 3.4GHz (486x7) with it.

I doubt its my processor though.

I'm back down to 400FSB on the 780i now and playing around with the memory settings. I experience a weird issue though but I don't know what is causing it.

The computer will be either on and in use, or just left to crunch SETI, all is quite fine and then after a few hours maybe, it just freezes. If I'm on it, it just freezes and nothing responds (not even Alt+Ctrl+Del) and if I'm not on it, when I get back it is in somewhat of a 'sleep' state but nothing is set in the power setting to turn off or go to sleep except my monitor after 20 minutes.

Just weird...makes any sense to anyone??

Thanks schizoid77 for pointing out the new bios...The 0101 beta bios is available on the Asus website but the description doesn't tell what it is supposed to address.

Does anyone know?

Update:

I got this info from a good source...
The new BIOS (0101) addresses some 2GB module problems and further decreases a few "holes" in the clocking area.
