I am in the process of troubleshooting, but I think that the Pent D820 finally died. I am not getting an POST beeps from the bios. No display either. I am resetting the bios to default as we speak (removed CMOS battery). Video card is working, so its not that. I removed the RAM and it still didn't POST.

My question is, anyone know if this board will support any of the new EXXXX dual cores? Its an older board, but thought I would check. If not, going to have to find an old D for sale!! Thanks in advance.

Edit: I did check the mobo manual. It says it is pentium dual core ready, but not sure if that means it would support the EXXX series chips.
 
Do the symptoms I have described sound like a dead cpu? This is a 3rd line PC that my GF sometimes uses, not wanting to spend $100 for a new cpu if its not even the problem 😛
 
Now that I think about it, the 8xx and 9xx were called core duo and e series being core2duo and then Intel went back and retroactively renamed the lower end e series Pentium dual core. Does that sound right? Is it any wonder we're confused?
 
Pentium Dual Core can refer to either the older 8xx & 9xx series as well as the newer e2xxx & e5xxx series.

In your case, google is your friend. From that chart you're not going to be able to use any of the Core 2 based cpus. Find a Celeron D, Pentium 4 or Pentium D chip and you're gtg. Starmicro is a great place to start.

But let's look at this a bit first. You've got a system that won't output video signal and doesn't give any beeps when you try to boot it, right? How have you verified the video card still works? Do the fans & etc start up when you press the power button? Lack of beeps makes me think the motherboard is dead, not the cpu (cpus are notoriously hard to kill).

And honestly, you might consider an upgrade instead. X2 4850e + 780G motherboard + 2GB DDR2 will set you back less than $150 and be considerably faster.
