How does the current Mac Pro Motherboard compare to the Asus P5E3 Premium Motherboard? How does the Dual 2.8 Quad Xeons in the Mac Pro compare to a single Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 45nm (12MB L2) 2.66GHz CPU? I need to understand these two questions to help me make a few choices.

well those boards are completely different.

the p5e3 has a much newer chipset with pci-e 2.0 and ddr3 . the mac pro supports lga771 , so you could get dual quads on it and it uses fb-dimm ram. ddr3 ram is also very expensive. fb-dimm has more latency, but uh 8 cores vs 4 cores, depending on what you are doign the apple is going to be faster .

you probably shoudl get a ddr2 based board, with a q9450 (theres some x38 boards with ddr2) as the most cost effecitve approach.

then again you seem to A. have no idea what you are buying, and B. based on the items in question have enough money to set in fire so get the mac I guess, even if you dont use the 4 other cores if money is no object its better. or get a normal xeon board like skulltrail

I have some idea of what I am doing, the pecking order of these parts, and I have already decided on the Mac Pro based on my needs. But I wanted to better understand the differences between the two, as different as they may be. Knowing what to buy for your needs is different than understanding why they are different. I do however have the basics down for sure.

I guess I wanted to see if there were more technical reasons other than just adding up the specs. For example: If I have a quad core Xeon at 2.8GHz, and a Quad core Q9450 at I think 2.66GHz, is the clock speed the only difference? Also, is the motherboard just the sum of it's RAM type, bus speed, and CPU socket?

The review of this Asus board was a glowing one. Other than a lower (compared to the Mac Pro) 8GB RAM limit, and the price of DDR3, I like it. So it did catch my eye. I like the Mac Pro for the 32GB RAM limit, the use of DDR2 (even if it's error corrected), and the raw power of 2 CPUs, which is 8 cores, But I don't know if the second CPU is worth the cost. It is not like you get twice the CPU power. I may just order the Mac Pro with one processor. But you only save $500.00 USD for dropping the one CPU.

And the Mac Pro is not cheap for me, but we all have to decide what we are willing to strive for. There is a lot I don't buy in order to buy a Mac Pro.

The P5E3 Premium is an enthusiast class motherboard. The board is built to provide exceptional power management for even the most exotic of overclocking scenarios. You would expect to see it used with the latest quad core extreme (unlocked multiplier) paired with the fastest/lowest latency ddr3 ram available. Likely the system would utilize extreme cooling. The primary application would be threshold overclocking/benchmarking.

Although certainly capable of workstation usage, I don't think this platform was designed for that market. That's my opinion anyway.

This whole trying to compare a workstation system (the Mac Pro), with the top-end enthusiast overclocking desktop motherboard completely baffles me. Seriously, WTF ? Also, I don't understand just randomly picking the most expensive desktop mobo on the market - that's a lot of money down the drain if you don't understand what it is exactly you're looking to do.

What are you going to be using the machine for? Someone who's buying a high-end overclocking board would likely be using it for things like gaming that don't necessarily require a massive amount of memory (4GB - 8GB is more than enough), or 100% stability. Whereas a workstation would normally be used for tasks like content creation or engineering, where high memory support and stability are important.

Are you just looking to buy the most expensive "whatever" on the market, or did you actually have a usage plan in mind?
