Wow i have taken a new distaste for Asus i order the p5e for my 8400 and it did the fans spin but no video post or anything. And then i read that asus was kind enough to advertise on there box that the board supported the chip, but alas they lied. Anyway i put my old p4 prescott in there to try and boot to bios so i could flash it and still no video. i have just barebones, videocard ram and proc/hsf. Everything turns on and whatnot but just like before no video no beeps no nuthin cept spinning fans...any sugestions?

EDIT: alright so i got it to boot...lol duhr missing connector....i flashed the bios, and now with the e8400 back in im still gettin the no video no beep issue

get bios 502 on a usb flash drive from asus's website

rename it to p5e.rom

make sure the flash drive is FAT or FAT32 formatted, NTFS = fail

install the cpu and put the flash drive in a USB port, then reset, delete to enter bios.

in the bios there is the EZ Flash 2 function

use this, find your p5e.rom file, and flash it.

your e8400 will be detected as normally.

if you have other problems with this asus board, it's likely because many people are having issue with ddr2-1066 ram, especially in 4x1GB configuration. try ddr2-800 instead, in 2x2GB config if you have 4GB.

mine worked with zero problems,

e8400,
2x2GB ddr2-800 corsair xms
etc

Thanks for that... but I have one problem.... I don't have a 775 chip to put into this board to do an upgrade. What is the minimum chip i can put into this board? Will a Celeron 420 conroe do the trick? Also, i have read that the board doesn't like 2.2v ram. It can be updated by getting into the bios, but you have to use a 1.8v ram to get in 1st... I'm thinking my no boot, no beep, no video issue may be one of these two, and i need cheap solutions.

maybe Microcenter has a $37 Celeron, and im sure i can find a cheap 1.8v 512Meg Dimm...

the only lga775 processor I own is the e8400, and I got the mobo working just fine . you don't need another processor

I really can't comment about ram compatibility since mine worked fine out of the box. But it seems that currently the best supported RAM is DDR2-800, so if possible you should try that first

Ended up needing another CPU to get the motherboard to post. Then I flashed to 502. Thanks for the instructions on putting the flash on a flash drive, worked great. I was wondering how i was going to get that 2Meg file on a 1.44M floppy... I guess the floppy is truly history now.

That's odd. my P5E posted just fine with E8400 without any bios update, but it needed bios update to correctly recognize the new cpu. The mobo displayed the warning while posting.

same here.... I would've been very pissed if the board did not post :|

my board didn't originally post ( an abit-ip35-e ) I had to put an e2140 in it and update the bios before i could put the e8400 in

I have this board and a E8400 and so far it posted and said it didn't reconize the cpu which i expected it to say. Then i press F2 to continue to go to setup and get the latest bios for my E8400 and the keyboard didn't respond. Turned it back on it doesn't post and the screen is blank with no signal. Called Asus and they said some bull about my memory being to high performance and starting it with cheap memory. A friend did mention something about the board having memory voltage problems and my crucials are default 2.2. But the people on here told me i have to get a old LGA 775 cpu and put it in then flash bios. After that i put my E8400 back in. The only problem is im a amd user so i don't have any spare LGA 775 cpus laying around where as i have plenty of amd cpus.

this is not the most stable board for out of the box support, that is for damn sure.

if you check the asus forums, there are countless problems like this.

I have heard people called into asus and they responded that the board does not seem to like Crucial. Go figure.

I suppose I'm lucky that I got everything to work on the first try. I would probably not recommend this board for most people, even though it serves me well

If I had to venture a guess, I would say they will probably release a good firmware update in the next 3 months or so addressing the DDR2-1066 problem. in the mean time you should probably just try some other RAM.

it may be a PITA but this is probably the fastest and easiest way to get your system up and running at this point

I heard something about the P5E needing low class memory with low voltage to start then set the voltage for your crucial and use them. And i heard i need to get a old LGA 775 cpu to get it to post and start up so i can update bios. I've read many reviews of people using crucial and they said it was fine.

honestly I'd like to be there to see the board not POST for someone with e8400. because it definitely POSTed just fine for me, even though it said CPU not detected or something.

Maybe some of the bios versions that the board ships with gives this problem

I wasn't saying I didn't believe you... but that's just incredible. Hearing about these kind of issues totally changes my attitude about ASUS.

Ya i have bad luck with computers i get the problems that are unlikely to happen. And this changes my view about asus too. I always thought they were solid till now. Heck i've been a Asus guy even when i didn't use asus. My first rig had a abit board that my friend built for me. Then the second rig i got asus loved it. And now this..

If there's a PC shop in your neighborhood, I might take it there and explain the situation, how you need either some cheap CPU or cheap RAM to get it to post,

they can probably fix you up faster and easier than any other way, and will probably charge you a nominal amount just for the inconvenience.

of course YMMV...

I know from personal experience when you talk to some of these "techies" they get all snobby and treat you like an idiot, won't listen to a thing you say and tell you it's going to be a $100 minimum, in which case you give them the 1 finger salute and GTFO

Yeah, well, to be fair, after i had ordered my board, and before i recieved it, i was reading about the posting troubles. When it happened to me, i was prepared to do what i needed to do to get it running. Fortunately, microcenter had a $40 CPU, and a $15 512Meg stick of DDR2. This is all it took. I crossed my fingers, but alas ... My bios was 0203 before i updated it.

that's about how much I would spend just to avoid headaches with RMA etc.

well done... the important thing is getting it up and running so

I just got this bored and the same CPU.

I want to update my bios to the latest 601 but im a bit unsure on one thing. I will use my USB flash drive and EZ Flash to update my bios. ASUS has 2 bios for downloading, both are the same (601). One is called "ALL OS" the other is called "DOS". Now i've looked on the forums of other sites and some say use "All OS" some say it shouldn't matter and another said use "DOS" as its Ez Flash.

Which one did you guys use on your boards? DOS or ALL OS?

help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

the dos one will be fine.

flash the bios through the BIOS menu EZ Flash 2 utility, do not use the alt-F2 on boot method
