Asus P5B and E6400 Major Issues

Brand new setup, from Tigerdirect. Without the processor plugged in, the motherboard will have monitor signal and come on the first screen, when i put the cpu in as soon as you hitt he power button the fan turns about half a turn and shuts off.

I called Asus, the guy said that the motherboard needs the bios updated for the e6400 to work. I can't do that because it wont work at all, he said borrow a socket 775 processor if I can. Thats not really possible, and it sounds like a load of crap. Please give your suggestions! Thanks
 
That advice he gave wasn't bad, but I'm not sure that's your problem. Many of these 775 boards had problems when the C2D was first released, and using a 775 Pentium was the easiest way of updating the bios. Otherwise you could order a new rom chip from the manufacturer, but that sometimes took more time.

The problem with all of that is those boards should have been sold off long ago, and boards on the shelf now should have the updated bios. If you can easily get an older 775 cpu, I'd go ahead and try it. Maybe a local computer shop can help you out. Otherwise get Asus to send you a new rom chip. I would say they're obligated to since they advertise the mb as being C2D compatible.
