ASUS P4PE/R/L/SATA Motherboard for Intel P4 478

I am planning on building a computer, and I'm mainly concerned about the kind/type of motherboard to get. I wouldn't mind buying one right now, though 512 MB of RAM and 2.4 GHz gives me the same feeling I had when I bought my 400 MHz in 1999 - the next week the price drops and components get slightly more powerful.

current specs for building the computer:

ASUS P4PE/R/L/SATA Motherboard for Intel P4 478
Crucial DDR PC2700 512 MB ? CL=2.5 ? Unbuffered ? Non-parity ? 6ns ? 2.5V ? 64Meg x 64
Intel Pentium 4 2.4BGHz 512K 533MHz CPU Northwood P478
Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM Hard Drive Model 8 MB Cache
M-Audio Audiophile 24/96
ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500DV (Maybe a Radeon 9700 Pro instead if the price comes down)
Antec 430W Power Supply TRUE430

I have mixed feelings about overclocking, but I leave that as something to consider.

In this order, my focus will be on:
1. video editing
2. dvd authoring
3. sound/music making
4. some gaming

I'm not making any Hollywood type productions, but video editing and sound editing may be pushed to the limits (editing 1 hour of footage at a time, and during music creation maybe having 16 tracks with a lot of FX per song project)

- would the setup be sufficient?

Other than that it will be just an average computer for money management, internet, ms office apps, etc.

Is the ASUS P4PE/R/L/SATA Motherboard for Intel P4 478 an old motherboard or middle-of-the-road?

I am also interested in Hyperthreading and GraniteBay..

In conclusion, is the motherboard going to be the one or do we need to look further?

Thank you,
bob

Why is everyone so helpful here? This is a great place I think I will stick around a while and help, too.

Hey Bob :) welcome to the forums :) The reason no one replied to you is that almost identical post to your's appear here continuously and many members get tired of answering the same question repeatedly ;) Anyways, sorry they didn't roll out the welcome mat for you so I'll be the welcome wagon :D

OK, I know nothing of the audio editing/creation but it sounds like you do so I'm certain you picked a great card for it. Now, there's a price cut getting ready to hit in on the 23rd (4 days :D ) and it'll be the last one for a few months so that'll be the time to buy that P4 2.4B. Also, with ram being at the best prices in some time so get a gig of ram as video editing can definitely benefit from it and probably some of the other apps you plan on using as well. And lots of HDD space is always nice if workin' with tons of video so the 120gb Western Digital Special Edition 8MB cache for $144 shipped@Newegg is a great choice for the little extra bank IMO.

Lastly, overclocking with the 2.4b w/stock cooler and the P4PE series board is very easy and you can go really conservative and still benefit a bit performance wise. Most users are getting C1 stepping 2.4B's which overclock like devils, I just got an OEM SL6RZ stepping that does 3.1ghz without touching the CPU voltage in the bios of 1.525v (actual voltage is 1.583 because the Asus boards overvolt a bit ) Anyways, you could just got to the advanced tab in the bios and set the FSB to 150 and the memory to 375 as my Crucial 2700 did that with ease@default 2.5v vDIMM=memory voltage (400 if you decide to buy 3200DDR) and be running 2.7ghz and 400DDR without touching anything else as long as you get a newer C1 stepped P4 2.4B. I hear some places garantee C1 so ask around and see which ones if you don't like to gamble.

Post back if you need any more help and I'll hook you up best I can :)

DAPUNISHER, thank you for your timely responce. Overclocking interests me a bit - I might go with a 3 GHz with HT later on (the 3.2 GHz with 800 MHz bus is also very interesting, but I don't know if I want to wait forever in upgrading this old P2 400 Mhz clunker..)

DAPUNISHER (or anyone..) one more question for now - when/if I set up my system, do I need to adjust any power settings in the BIOS as to prevent frying the motherboard after long periods of use? Or, can I just plug in all the equipment, and just boot the system not worrying about the power settings? (I know setting the power would help with overclocking, but that's all I need to know for now..)

Bob.

P.S. I didn't expect to have a welcome wagon, but I'm glad to have an answer to my questions.. I'm sorry for my previous attitude. Thanks again..

No problemo Bob, anyways, You don't need to mess with the power settings in the bios at all unless you are addressing a particular preference you have that the power schemes in windows dosen't address. For instance, I leave my P4PE/L/2.4B@3.1ghz on 24/7/365 crunching SETI for TeAm Anandtech (we could use you and your new rig so LMK if you're interested :) ) and I just leave the power settings in the bios@default and set the power scheme in windows to Always on and it runs perfect with a 100%CPU load so the power options are up to you and won't harm your system, but it can up the electric bill if you don't set it to standby and shut down the monitor and HDD using the power scheme options in windows ;)

Haha, that much power eh? I'll let you know if/when I get my box set up! Until then..the wait goes on
