Asus P4PE and HDD problems

I just changed my old system(Asus cusl2-c and p3 933) to new Asus P4PE("basic"P4PE/lan/gd) and P4 2,53ghz. Hdds(maxtor 80gb,ibm 20gb and 40gb) worked fine in old system but now...

I can't get my maxtor 80gb(diamond max 9(or any other newer hdds ))
to work properly in win98se or using win95osr2 startup disk(worked fine in old motherboard). Hdds work fine as slaves but not as masters, but my very old(1,7gb) hdd works fine as master and other(newers) as slave.

I've tried:
different cables(40,80)
--::-- partition types(fat, fat32, ntfs(w2k))
--::-- drive sizes(or partition sizes)(changes and deletes made by partion magic 4 and 7, tried Fdisk, maxtors own maxblast+II)

So I've tried different Hdd's(Fat32) which have had win98se installed(in old mb) and everytime same things have happened, first drive (c:) doesn't show anything(data gone) and size is 1/3 or something, but other drives like d: e: looks like normal(size, data).

And everytime when i deleted and repartioned hdd, I could copy things to drives, but when I tried to delete it came text "partiontable is incorrect" and the data didn't deleted(And drive sized showed wrongly).
And after that partition magic gave warnings like "fat copies are not identical", "invalid partition table" and some other warnings about clusters(that didn't disappear when I tried to delete files).

I also tried to install win2k but didn't get well and after crash I looked drive with partition magic, it couldnt recognice the partition(in old system it showed fine),

Whooh what a text, hopely you did understand my problem(BIG PROBLEM, I don't wanna use udma2 2gb hdd as master, when I could use udma5 80gb).

Any suggestions (or should I just wait that someday will come bios version that fixes my problem or IS my mb "monday"-version that should send back?)?

(updated just bios to 1003.1 , didn't help.):(

Just a thought. You may need to download a new version of Fdisk for your Maxtor. I had a similar problem with using 2 - 40 GB IBM drives in a RAID 0 configuration. Through some lucky reading, I discovered that the version of Fdisk in Win98, Win98SE cannot support the larger drives. I forget the size cutoff, but a much smaller size would show up in FDisk when the partition was created and that's all that would appear when formatted. If you are using the original boot disk or CD's for setting up the drive, you will need to download the updated FDisk. I found it by searching Microsoft's site and replaced the original FDisk on my bot disk with the updated version. Worked fine after that. If you set up the drive using third party partioning software or Maxtor's overlay software this may explain why it woriked before. Don't know for sure if this is yor problem, but thought I would share what worked for me.

Perhaps you should update to a more modern OS.

My P4PE works fine with XP and my Maxtor Diamond Max 60GB.

silly question, are you connecting your hard drives to RAID controller (if you have one) or regular IDE ones?

Also, are your hard drives detected correctly during POST?

No questions are silly if somebody is trying to solve something! Yes my hard drive is connected to regular IDE and hdd is detected correctly during POST.

I tried that hint that SDPCave gave to me, but it didn't help(thanks anyway) AND like BDawg said I should update to win XP, but it don't solve my problem. Because these hdds still work fine if I put them back to my old system(Asus cusl2-c or even older system). I also tried that Maxtors Max Blast + II, which installed ez-bios(I forced maxblast to do that, it didn't do that automatically) to my hdd, but again it didn't help.

IS ANYONE using this mb(Asus P4PE) with Maxtor diamondmax 9 80gb (or over) successfully?

(Should I change my mb?)

Maybe you should contact ASUS about it. You never mentioned if the drive is being detected by the BIOS.

About the OS, if the bios sees the drives, it's not impossible that the OS has trouble finding the right driver for the adapter.

Yes I sent this problem to Asus, but I haven't gotten any replyes. And Yes bios shows hdd correctly (size) and windows give them drivers ok.

Yeah maybe should change this mb because I can't get it to work drives like 20gb, 40gb and 80gb, which have served me in much older systems.
I know the barriers about 32gb, but my 20 gb doesn't work? Maybe there's really something wrong in mb? So monday is return day :) !

SO as you have read I had lot of hdd problems(with newer drives 8gb, 20gb, 40gb and 80gb), but my very old hdd(1,7gb) worked fine . So I tried allmost everything, but nothing worked with newer drives... until I realized that the old drive doesn't use ultra dma mode, so I disabled ultra dma mode AND Voila everything works fine.

I mean that I can use my bigger hdds. BUT IT'S really not so fun to use hdds without UDMA, maybe Future bios updates will correct that(but I'm still calling tomorrow to my reseller, about this situation, if I could change my mb). I hope this info will help some others, because it took WEEK me to realize this f...... thing.

For such a hot motherboard, I'm overly surprised that it doesn't support DMA access for it's Hds. Is it the case for everyone. Cuz, if it is, Asus should be pretty worried !
