Asus P4P800 Deluxe saying system failed cpu test, video card causing it!

Ok, I have a P4P800 Deluxe, and a 6600GT AGP card. I take it out, because I notice I see artifacts because of overheating, so I clean the heatsink on it, free it from dust. I also clean the old thermal goo out with 70% Isopropyl alcohol. I apply Antec's Silver compound, and put it all back together. I in no way mistreated it, static shocked it, or anything that I would believe to harm it, just clean it. Anyways I go to put it back in, and my motherboard says "System Failed Cpu Test" and the screen is black. After trying a lot of things, I try swapping my video card with a ti4200, and it works. I am thinking this looks like I have an expensive door stop here :(, and probably at my hands. I have replaced heatsinks before and cleaned them, at least 2 dozen times before, but I suppose there is a first to everything. Can there be anything done to try to get something working? Anyone else expierence this?

Sounds like your video card got damaged, or that is was already damaged before you touched it. A good possibility if you were seeing artifacts...

I wouldn't consider your pc an expensive door stop quite yet, just replace the video card for $120 and you'll be all set.

I think it is pretty much dead, I just put myself in a strange position though, wonder if i can conjur up money to go PCIe, with AMD. My system now is ok, but I did plan on switching soon. If I went AMD I'd want an X2, and that is a pretty large investment. I could go cheaper to a 3200+ and upgrade later though. Then that is just like replacing my card now. Decsions Decsions.

What kind of cpu do you have in your P4P800 Deluxe? If you still have a fairly strong cpu in that rig, you could replace the card with this AGP X850XT, which is $250 after mail in rebate. That should probably squeeze a bit more time out of your rig. Of course that all depends on what you currently have in there and what you use your rig for.

Edit: LOL @ Intelman07 wanting to buy an AMD cpu :)

Well this is a multipurpose machine, I do school work on it (presentations word processing, graphical sometimes). I watch movies on my computer, I game, sometimes some video encoding. I have a 2.6C @ 3.4 Northwood Pentium 4. Intelman will no longer work, but I dont care lol. Clearly AMD stole the lead.

6800GS in agp is your best bet. im running a 2.4C @ 3.4 on a p4p800. but its slowly dying, as my cmos coin or whatever is busted and the agp lock fell off.

Slowly dying eh. I have been overall pretty happy with my P4P800. I am still debating my options, I have plenty of time to think I guess.

Here's the deal, I am going to replace it, but do you think I should get another 6600GT, or would something else be a better choice. That ATI X850XT looks intresting. As does the AGP variant of the 6800GS, although I have not seen any 6800GS AGP for sale yet.

I am actually seriously considering the 6800XT AGP. I really do want Pixil Shader 3.0!

Wait what about a 6800 NU
