Asus P4P800 Deluxe mobo fried....what now??

I took my mobo to a repair shop since it wouldn't post. They tested everything and said the mobo was bad. Now I have a problem...do I buy a replacement socket 478 board which I can only find used and at a premium price around $100. Or do I build an entirely new system from scratch. My old setup had 3gig of ram...and overclocked P4 2.4ghz processor and an agp x8 vid card. ...with soundblaster card audio. I won't be able to use any of the old stuff on the new motherboards except for possibly the sound card. I really don't need a super powerful computer for my needs. The old setup was plenty fast for me.

So what do I do now? I cannot find a reasonable cost replacement mobo that will utilize all the hardware I now have. On Ebay the 865PE based mobo's are going for at or over $100 which to me is ridiculous for old technology. But ebay buyers most times have more money than sense.

Any suggestions or where to find a used similar board? I do not need raid or even sata presently. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have done some more research and the only used boards that seem readily available are the:

Asus P4P800 series
Abit IS7-E and the IC7-G (875P chipset)
GIGABYTE GA-8IPE1000-G

Out of these boards which one should I go after. I Do any of you out there own one of them and could shed some light on the subject.
It is really hard to get reviews and info on older mobo's I am finding.

I also have the P4P800 deluxe (even the same Antec 1080 AWG SOHO case).

you probably are better off going with the P4P800, as its basically the same as the deluxe minus a few bells and whistles you should be able to drop your existing HD in and boot, no reloading of windows.

as I recall, in benchmarks it was just a smidgen slower than the 875 chipsets. guess it comes down to how much effort you want to put into it and price.

Well I would like to get a similar P4P800 board as well...the only problem is finding one that is not in China. The higher end boards on Ebay in this series are going for at or near what the cost new. I for the life of me can't figure out why old technology is costing so much. It seems the P4C800 boards with the 875P chipset are more readily available so that is where I may end up. I can't seem to touch a P4P800 for under $120 on Ebay.

I'm a little worried about buying a board for that much money when it's not guaranteed by the seller. Most of the boards are sold as working but "as is".

I saw a basic board the Abit IA7 which seems like it might work for me.

I really wish someone could give me some input on the Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000-G I mentioned above. It looks like I can get one from China for $80 but I can't find any review on the board.

the high price is just supply and demand. it makes since in a time oriented situation like an office where, even with a high price replacement board, an IT guy can swap the boards out in an hour and youll be back up and running. no added time loading a new OS, drivers, software, patches, configuring etc.

my main worry about buying something that old is there were a lot of bad capacitors floating around at that time. who knows what condition the caps in an old board are in, even if they look good (ie no bulges) they are probably weak.

honestly you are probably better off just buying a new mobo, CPU and RAM. you should be able to reuse most everything else except video and if youre not gaming on board will be fine. I think some boards even have both AGP and PCIE slots so you might be able to reuse the ASUS. might also have to buy an IDE card depending on how many IDE devices you plan to keep. you can probably cobble something up for less that $200 (maybe way less) that will be faster and new.

I know thats not what you are asking, just letting you know what I would do in your situation.

I appreciate your candid opinion. Due to the fact as you said I will be paying top dollar for a used board with questionable longevity the risk is high it may fail soon after I purchase it. This brings a whole new set of problems however. Even though I built this rig I have been out of the hardware loop for some time. I do not know what is available nor do I really have time or knowledge to research computer parts. I need to be up and running as soon as possible.

Could anyone suggest a replacement board and memory that I could use what I have now as far as hardware? Something that is stable and user friendly. I do not need raid or even sata presently. Something with at least 3 PCI slots and an AGPX8 slot? Or could you suggest where I might find some information for a setup like this.? I have never used AMD but it is an option as well. I am not married to this old processor.

The Mods get unhappy with this and tend to lock one or the other thread.

Well my first post in computer help was because I read advice to post there to ask a question about a "replacement" mobo. Then after I decided I was going to build a "new system" I read the "sticky" and it said to post NEW SYSTEM requests in "general hardware" which is what I did. So you see they were actually 2 different topics one was replacement and one was for a new system advice.

Sorry if I offended you ....I thought I was following rules as stated in the sticky ......mea culpa!

The mods can delete this thread if they like because there are no replies anyway. Thanks

I have the same mobo and case.

Asrock made a mobo that used the new processors and had 2 slots for DDR and 2 slots for DDR2, you just could use one or the other type at a time. It also had both an AGP and PCIE slots. I haven't looked for it in awhile so I'm not sure if they still make it or not.
