Does the mobo automatically detect and enable dual channel or does it manually need to be done?

Depends on your cpu and memory used, but yes, it detects automatically.

I have a p4 2.6c and 2x 512 crucial pc 3200 chips.

It should do it automatically then. If your sticks are matched pairs, and you have them in the right slots (either the gray or the blue) there should be no problem.
