Asus P3V4X and poor memory performance in Win2K?

This is a continuation of the thread http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=29&threadid=189734

I cannot figure out anything else to do concerning the crappy memory performance problem.

I just installed my P3V4X w/ latest 4-in-1's (1005 bios came loaded) and have 512MB PC100 Infineon (4 - 128MB sticks). The memory scores are less than the P3 500!!

I can get WPcredit to open but when I change 64 from 11 to 12 it reboots the damn PC everytime. I have tried doing 64 first, after I click a few others, and last...doesn't matter. I changed the mem timings and settings in BIOS, no change. I tried using a single stick of memory, no change.

Any ideas?

Try setting yoru ram in Bios to the "by Spd" selection. That enables 4-way interleaving by default.

There are plenty of problems with Windows 2000 and the VIA Apollo KX133 chipset. The next thing will solve plenty of problems.

Start Windows 2000 in the safe mode. Press F8 by starting the computer. After that go to the directory 'winnt\system32\drivers\' Here you can rename "VIAAGP.SYS" to "VIAAGP.OLD" after that copy the new "VIAAGP.SYS" like you can find it in bestanden to this directory. This new driver takes care of a lot of problems. After this restart the computer. The VIAAGP.SYS you'll need you can find at the Site of ASUS.

I could not locate any updated VIAAGP.sys file on the ASUS homepage....There is a VIAAGP1.sys in the 4.23 4-in-1 package though.

Changing the memory timing to SPD didn't help either. :(

Yes, I am aware of Samantha. I ran the memory bench when I have my BXMaster in and it was 400ish....it appears to be a motherboard issue with the P3V4X. Many people have complained about the SAME low memory scores in Win 98SE when using a P3V4X.

I had a P3V4X up till saturday when I thought I could work the heatsink free that I had applied to the pll clock generator with thermal paste and a dab of super glue. It really does bond instantly. DOH!
Anyways, before I destroyed a perfectly good motherboard I had been reading that thread and managed with WPCredit to get the memory score at 360/412 which is respectable with my 500e at 667. It boosted my 3D mark scores to 4810 which wasn't bad also.
My CUV4X should be here tomorrow or friday so I'll see how it goes with that:)

first off, it isn't a kx133 mb.

secondly, the agp thing won't help your memory performance scores whatsoever... Have you tried running the ram "by spd" in bios? Does that help your mem scores at all.

And third, Sandra works partially in 2000. The memory tests are accurate in 2k.

If you set memory timings to SPD and the system/sdram freq option to Auto then 4-way interleave is enabled. I just changed the 50 & 51 registers in WPCREDIT to "FF" and saved them with WCPRSET.

I found the info here:
http://www.overclockers.com/tips105/index03.asp

I gained roughly 50 points on the SANDRA memory bench to put me at 275. Even though I have a P3 700 @ 868 and 512MB memory my score is still slightly slower than a P3 500. :| I should be in the 400+ range.......

Has anyone else acheived a NORMAL score for their memory bench in SANDRA on a P3V4X in Win98 or 2K?

Mike, as far as the VIAAGP.sys file goes, I assumed he was referring to another question I had asked earlier about no AGP4x on the P3V4X & a GF2. I found the reg file that enables it, but it caused screen anomolies.

hmmm.. What FSB are you runnign at that speed?

Cause I have 4way interleaving set with WPRcredit, and My ram is set CAS2 150mhz in the bios. My Sandra Memory scores are 410/478. I'm running 256mb of Crucial CAs2 pc133, and win2k.

Mike
EDIT: Before I upgraded to ram that could do CAS2 at 150, my mem benchmarks with 150mhz CAS3 were 348/412. Its a huge difference if you can enable cas2.
