ASUS P3B-F and FPGA2 Celeron?

I have an ASUS P3B-F with a slocket and a 400mhz Celeron. This hardware was free, and thus I know little about it. The system is adequate, with the exception of the CPU power... I saw an 1.1ghz FCPGA2 Celeron on NewEgg for about $50... I just really need to know if this would work? Is the core too new? Is the board too old? I can't find adequate info on ASUS's site.

You need to do some homework through google search and the faq's here used to have some info but basically you need a different slotkit model to mount a fc-pga celeron(non 'A' model) on the P3B. This is due to the different voltages required. There are different model celerons for you as well, the .25u ones like your 400 go up to 533, then the .18u ones go up to 1.1, then the tualitans are .13u and would work with a mod or a powerleap adaptor on your mb.

If you can find a nice P3 slot 1 it may be a bit easier. The BX chipset unfortunately only has a 2/3 agp adaptor so any fsb over 100 results in an agp bus overclock. Most of the older Gforces & Voodoos handle it well. I currently have a MSI BX master with a P3 700 running at 133fsb for 933 and an agp bus at 89mz with an asus 6800 ddr gforce on it.

Its a good mb and at your price it'll be a learning experience or you could sell it and get something more up to date.

I have (had) a cel 850 in my P3B-F, rev 1.04, bios v1006 using an MSI Slotket I bought here for $10. Works great. Using this you can run upto a PIII 1 Ghz or cel 1.1 (not the A's.)

However, if you want to go nuts, there is a ~relatively easy mod that will allow you to run the tualatin FCPGA2's as well. Its a bit involved, but people have run cel 1.2 @1.6g, and OC'd the newer 1.4 cellies as well. This works on most bx boards.

for more than you possibly ever want to know, go here ---> :D check out the forum links as well.

My cel 850 just died, and I'm debating doing this myself. Near P4 power for $60!!

Asus P3B-F should support up to 1.1 (not an "A" version) if your slotket allows it (I had one that didn't work and one that did). You will also need to update your bios to 1008 beta 3 or later. Here is the AT FAQ for more info.

Also, Computer Geeks currently has slot-1 1 Ghz cpus with 100 fsb for $84.
