Hi,

Apparently these onboard wifi on the motherboard just doesn't work too well on
the second story of my apartment building. The router is on the first floor so the small asus white antenna keeps dropping the signal and spiking up my ping in game.

Anyone has any luck with these z77 asus wifi antennas?
My roommate takes care of the router, its in his room so i have no idea what model or make it is but my macbook pro picks up the signal just fine.

Should i just upgrade to a new pci/usb wireless card ?

I will try to answer any questions...

I am looking for any recommendations of a good solution/ wireless card.

I will appreciate the help. thank you!:)

The first thing I would do is optimize antenna position. If you can point the router's antenna such that the side of it faces your desktop that will give you the best coverage (Imagine a line going from the router to your desktop. The antenna should be pointing perpendicular to that line). Once the router's antenna is configured you'll have to experiment a bit with yours.

Chances are even if there are other devices on the first floor to service you can still lay the router antenna flat and pointing to the side to cover a good slice of the first floor and second floor. That depends entirely on your particular situation, though.

@JackMDS

What item did you link? I can't seem to get the link you posted to load correctly.

Edit: Also, I am about to buy this motherboard, and I thought a big advantage was that the Wi-fi is already taken care of. But, is the included wi-fi solution not very good - would I be better off getting a separate wi-fi adapter?

Thanks

I think he meant to link to this Rosewill RNX-N600UBE Wireless Dual Band Adapter.

Thanks -- that looks like a good adapter!

I just checked the user comments for the RNX-N600UBE. In the second review, posted by drfreezz, he says this is a good unit, but he also recommends this model RNX-N180UBE.

This unit also has good reviews. It's single band, rather than dual band, like the RNX-N600UBE, but if you don't need dual band operation, you'll save $15. :)

I just bought one of these MOBO's and will let you know how it does on signal strength. The place I am taking this unit is pretty remote so it will not get the kind of signal degradation you would suffer in an apartment setting.

I would suggest reading the documentation that came with the MOBO and see if you can select a different channel to ride. When you are in a close environment with other wireless signals you can find the signal getting trampled on by others who also have wireless routers in the area. The key to cleaning this up is finding the least used channel for the router or the receiver.

IE: Out of the box most routers are set to channel 6, if you set the channel to either 1 or 11 you should do better.

Most issues with onboard wireless is the fact that the antennas sit behind a huge metal signal blocking box otherwise known as the case...
