Was looking at the ASUS website and scrolled down until i got to socket 754. I then cicked around on the various mtherboards to find that they are all the best! Each motherboard had the phrase 'flagship' or 'king' which implies that it is the best. Which is the best? Also for athlon 64 it is socket 754 and that athlon 64 fx is 940. Which is the better investment. Will getting an athlon fx and a motherboard to match or will newer athlons have differant sockets and so i will keep on having to upgrade. I hope some of you can see whct I am trying to say...
 
you should probably go for a socket 939 since the new 90nm processors amd is making are s939's.
 
Can you get mobo's that support both? May sound daft but it will mean i can get a normal 64 chip now and wait for prices to fall on fx and then upgrade cpu and save money by sticking with the same mobo. 939 you say. mmm, looking here there is only one board for 939's yet 940 say they support fx's and there are alot more to chose from. mmm, I am a wee bit confused.
 
I think you're best off staying w/ the S754, at least from a price/performance point of view. Then, when that is to slow, go for s939. By that time those prices should be low enough that it'll be affordable.

unless you want to pay the big bucks now, then go s939.
I'd avoid s940, b/c you need to run registered ECC ram with them, which is a little more pricey, and a lot harder to find.
 
was having a look around and found that msi are a bit faster. was looking at these two KN8 Neo Platinum and K8N Neo2 Platinum. They are the two differant sockets but the np2 says it supports 64 ans well as 64 fx. Is this just me talking crap, I guess I will go for the cheaper cpu and get the normal NP and then upgrade bothe when the time comes *sighs*
 
For the S754 there are Sempron and A64 CPU's only (A64's in 2800, 3000, 3200, 3400, 3700 speeds)
For s939 there are A64 and A64FX CPU's, and there is talk of Semprons coming eventually. (A64 in 3500 and 3800 speeds)
for s940 there are A64FX and Opteron CPU's only.

None of the sockets are compatible with each other though.
 
I second the vote for MSI K8N Neo Platinum. It remains the best board I've ever owned or assembled. (I still have fond memories of my old Tyan Tiger 100's, but they are now out of service - not worth the power to run them)
 
this is my first MSI K8T Neo FSR mainboard. i've always used either ASUS or Gigabyte and Abit. i'm really pleased with the quality, performance, and price of this mobo!! but if u have the cash why not go with a socket 939 or save a portion of the money for the FX later on!

Ya, looks nice, but doesn't the MSI perform better, thats what I heard any way. Thanks for the proccessor link though. I am definately going for the normal 64's as the prices of fx is so extreme (unless any of you guys no where i can get it cheap 😉 ), so now I just need to purchase. The way I see it is by the time I can get 512mb graphics card at a reasnable price I will also be able to get fx's cheap as well. At that stage I might upgrade the whole setup (including ram etc) but for now as the prices being as they are I will stick to normal 64's. So my last questions to you guys (on this thread) are: is the msi the best, which I am now pretty positive it is, and do you know any good websites to get the mobo and the CPU from?
 
Yea, I'm in the UK. We have are own version though...Ebuyer.com 😀 I prefere the layout of it and everything except the pictures, thats were newegg have the prize.

If you're going to go S754 go with either the new DFI board, or the Epox K8DA3+. That is if you are into overclocking at all.
