Today we’re facing the launch of a brand new architecture from Intel dubbed “Sandy Bridge”. If you haven’t seen the leaks around the net over the past few months, you haven’t been paying attention. Everyone is excited about the potential of this new architecture, and it’s no wonder. The rumors of nearly 5GHz with air cooling coupled with a healthy dose of architectural efficiency improvements will create a lot of happy enthusiasts. The manufacturers in this game have not been sitting idle either, with each one cleverly seeding tons of samples to add to the pre-launch hype.

Maximus IV Extreme
My subject today is the new Asus Maximus IV Extreme, a Republic of Gamers (“ROG”) branded model which represents the top-end of the P67 offerings from Asus. As always, they’ve managed to pack an overwhelming number of technologies and features into this product and it’s my goal to give you honest feedback based on my experience.

This is looking promising for the new sandy line ... hopefully the good news keeps coming because I want 5GHz 24/7 🙂
 
What do you guestimate a mobo like this would run? $300+? I am going to get a 2600k but I'm not sure who I'm going to look at mobo wise but I really like the features on this one. Though I would give up the extra full speed PCIe slots for a cheaper price...
 
Asus now has P8 details on it's site.

Select Products --> motherboards --> Intel socket 1155 and choose H67 and/or P67.
 
I've already decided on the maximum. I've been so happy with my Rampage formula that i decided to stick with Asus - It's also a plus that it's red so it goes faster!

The Asus Maximus is 2600 NOK according to an online store here in Norway which is $440USD 😉. Although you can't directly compare the price to US prices as wages are higher here in Norway.

I might also add that 2700NOK will buy you a Rampage III Extreme 1366 so the new Maximus IV Extreme is cheaper than the curernt high end Asus ROG 1366 motherboard!

Yeah as much as I want Asus I'm not paying a premium for their name. I'm not spending more than $200 on a LGA 1155 board. I don't even plan to go that high unless I can get the Asus Sabertooh for that much.

Thanks for the prices, I will check the features on all those boards. I don't need SLI and I don't intend to crossfire my 6970. Beyound the main video card I just need two PCI Express slots for my NIC & space fo an add-on card for Lightpeak. Which is why I was looking at the basic model & Pro.
 
5,1ghz@1,45 I wonder if 1,45 is little too much juice for this chip or not. what's the safe voltage to run 24/7 for sandy?

980X (32nm) chip has a maximum voltage of 1.375V
975 (45nm S1366) has a maximum voltage of 1.375V
880 (45nm S1156) has a maximum voltage of 1.400V

This means at most the safest voltage on SB will be 1.400V, but most likely well below that. I would wager 1.350V. This is why all these 1.45-1.50V 5.2ghz overclocks are only for e-peen.

Think about it...1.45V is already way out of spec for a 45nm chip, nevermind 32nm!
 
actually, I seem to understand that bloomsfield is good up to 1.45 or even 1.475, as long as temps are good. A good gulftown, (B0 or B1) should be good till about 1.4 or even 1.425. Keep in max voltage isnt just about process size, but architecture and stepping as well. also, the 1366 chips, as well as 1156 ones, will be killed faster with uncore vtt than with vcore.

With that said, I do not know what the max safe vcore is for SB, but I would think it would be around that of gulftown. the i7's seem to have more vcore tolerance than the penryns, even at 32 nm. but over 1.45 still seems excessive, unless you are on a C0 920/940/965.
