Hey there, Ive been searching and searching the internet trying to find a solution to my problem but nothing has worked. Here is what it is:

I recently decided to upgrade one of my computers with 2 extra GBs of RAM and ran into an issue. I installed the RAM correctly - seating everything properly - but when I powered the computer on - I got the error beep. It was 1 long beep followed by 2 short beeps. Now, the manual says that this means that no RAM is detected. Other sources say that this is a video error but I dont know which is right.

I dont know or understand what the issue is because Ive tested the parts and they all work. I installed each stick of RAM in another computer and all checked out fine with the other computer booting up like normal. I also swapped out the videocard and still got the error beep.

I ALSO cleared the CMOS and reset the BIOS using an onboard jumper. The error beep occurs no matter what I do or change. The videocard works, all the RAM is fine and tested, power supply seems okay, CPU seems fine, and no metal or cables are touching the motherboard in the wrong way so what on earth is going on? Is the motherboard shot?

How many sticks of RAM do you use?
A friend of mine had one of those mobos and he could only use 2-3 sticks, eventhough the board had 4 slots. I think this was somewhat common a number of years back.

Well I tried using 4 sticks and thats when the error began. I then tried using one stick at a time and it didnt work. I used those same sticks in another computer and the computer worked fine. Now, just today I reset the CMOS again and tried to use 4 sticks again - did I cause the same issue by doing that - cuz I got the same error beep again. Im not sure whats going on.

Check you RAM's specs and manually ajust the memory settings in BIOS accordingly. I never had a SPD get it right once.

Problem is - I cant even get into the BIOS - its a blank screen. Nothing at all shows up. And I dont think I can get into the BIOS without RAM can I? I cant adjsut anything. I think that might be it - the voltage needing to be increased - but it wont even boot with one stick of good RAM in it. It just beeps and gets pissed off. lol.

The manual is correct. It's whining about the RAM so put it back to how it used to be and see if it boots again. Once booted, update to the latest BIOS. I also notice that there is a qualified list for RAM so those new sticks just may not be 'qualified.' Oh well.

4Mb AWARD BIOS, PnP, DMI, WfM2.0, SM BIOS 2.3

More importantly, he hasn`t mentioned what RAM he`s using. What was originally there and what he added.

Although the above is now moot given the error he`s encountering.

Either your vid card is fried all of a sudden, or, depending on what card you have/how long it is, you smacked it when installing your new memory. Try another card.

Alright to answer all questions:

The RAM Im using is DDR2 800MHz. Both brands are that kind - what was there and what was added.

Second, the videocard isnt the problem. I looked up my mobo manual and it says that the beep code is a memory error - No Memory detected.

Third, I already tried another videocard. I mentioned that earlier. Same goes for the RAM. I tried each stick in another computer an they all worked.

Nothing makes sense. If the RAM is good - why the error? If the videocard is good - why no display? If all the parts work in other computers - why doesnt it detect them? And if the motherboard is shot - how is it giving error codes?

I cleared the CMOS, reset the BIOS (using the jumper). And tried using only one card...so..what the hell?

1 long 2 short on that bios means that it's the video and can't display. Sounds like the mobo's video card slot is bad. Had the same thing happen on M2n-SLI Deluxe. Replaced with M2N68-AM plus about four months ago. The MOBO can still give error codes, the whole board is not bad just the PCIe slot. Did you try the other PCIe slot? It probably won't work but worth a try.

Ya, I did try the other slot actually. It still didnt work. Nothing works. Its all gone to hell but I think its safe to say its probably the mobo...now where the hell am I going to get an AM2 mobo that will run a Athlon 5200+?

lol the first link is out of stock and Im not sure about the other two in the second link. The MSI seems to have the same 2GB RAM limitation. One reviewer on newegg said that he added RAM to the #2 slot and the computer wouldnt post. I dont want to screw myself...

Ended up getting the AsRock mobo and it works perfectly now. I guess that Asus wasnt as great as I thought it was. Should have replaced it years ago...:/

Glad it worked out for you. I had two of those boards and was happy with them. In fact one of them is still working. ASUS makes quality boards I use them for my computers exclusively and have for about 15 years. ASRock has come a long way. I have heard good things about them.

This is bs i broke a prong on my cpu so my comp sat till i got a new cpu got the new cpu put it in the mb and now i have the beep problem myself i tried the vid card the mem i took the mb out of the case and put it all back together again ive taken the ram out and tried to start it,i did the same with my sound card vid card and its weird its kinda like its not getting enough juice because it shuts in like 4 seconds but if u keep starting it like the 3 time u start it..Its like a car that needs a jump you can hear it almost turn over then BOOM!! dies out gain but i have another comp and i use my ram/sound card/vid card/ and it works fine but its a shitty mb&cpu and when i switch the voltage on the power supply it stays on but keeps beeping..i think im gonna build a new comp but WTF just like that nothing happens to it and its broke not only that but its saying its my vid card wich is fine and an asus tech support guy told me on the phone its my vid card just grab a new 1...but it works fine with a different MB weird
