ASUS Laptop Problems [Fan Oriented]

Hi there,

I bought an ASUS Gaming Laptop a year and a half ago (Christmas time), and I'm recently having problems with it. It was overheating a lot (Even with a high quality cooling fan under it).

Now, the fan is making a 'whirring' sound. It sounds like there is a piece of paper type thing it's hitting while the fan circles, I have checked and there is nothing there. So, I have no idea. It may be a bearing or something lose..

Any ideas on the problem, or the fix?

Could be debris - a dead bug - a dust bunny - or a worn bearing. Fix for the first two is to blow it with compressed air, or vacuum it. For a bearing, replace it - but that is not normally a user job.

It's definitely the worn bearing then. I have taken it apart and there is nothing in the way. Approximately how much would it cost to take it to a shop?

Depending on how hard it is to remove the fan, if the bearing has become stuck or the lubricant has dried, as a last ditch effort, sometimes, you can revive a fan by spraying the bearing with WD-40. If you try this, be sure to avoid spraying it on other parts.

While you're in there, see if the fan looks like a standard part that you can replace for less than you'd have to pay from sources other than Asus (or any laptop maker).

Good luck. 🙂
