Asus K8N-E, hoping its not messed up!

I just worked on building a new comp today using an Asus K8N-E deluxe mobo, and AMD 64 3000+ processor. I have an AGP graphics card. I don't have any memory yet - it was backordered and should come tomorrow. But I figured it would still boot without it, correct me if I'm wrong? I just figured it would give me an error about the memory. Anyway here is what happens, I plug everything in - monitor, keyboard and power. The green LED on the mobo comes on. I push the power switch and the fans spin for a moment and the speaker makes a small 'chirp' sound, but then that is it. I push the power button again and the same thing happens. Just wondering what might be up?
Thanks!

can't boot without ram. In order to boot you HAVE TO HAVE the following: Mobo, cpu, ram, video card, hard drive (i think the pc will actually power up without a hdd, but all you can do is go to the bios) monitor, keyboard.

Alright, I borrowed a 256 mb DDR DIMM chip from another comp, it is pc2100 and according to asus that should be supported in this board. When I had it installed in slot 1, the same thing happened.. wouldn't boot..

Not exactly sure, I will have to wait and try out the RAM that I have coming tomorrow. Just curious though about the way the fans started to spin then stopped, I would have thought that with no memory installed nothing would have even started at all?

What AGP card are you using? Also, what brand and model of power supply are you using?

Graphics card is XFX GeForce MX 4000 128mb ddr, and power supply is JustPC 425 watt.

I would get a high-quality power supply if you're building a decent gaming system. Fortron, Antec and Enermax are three brands that have earned pretty good repuations here. What will the system's total spec look like when you have all your hardware?

Yeah I was just thinking that about a better power supply. I am building this for video editing. So here is how things will look:

K8n-e deluxe mboard
AMD 64 3000+
XFX geforce me 4000 128mb
2- 512mb kingston ddr pc3200
1- maxtor 30gb hdd
2- maxtor 200gb hdd (sata)
1- cd r/w
1- dvd r/w (external, firewire)

Think thats about it...

Well, got my kingston memory put in today, 2 512mb chips, and guess what? same thing. I push the power button and it makes a little noise, the fans spin for a moment, then nothing. What could be wrong?

By the way - i did reset the cmos.

Another note (sorry) - I tried a PCI VGA card from another computer that was working, still the same thing.

Your power supply could be a cheap piece of trash, for starters. :)

BTW, you can find a whole list of other suggestions here (top link on that page). As you can see, the first item on the list is "scummy-quality power supplies."

Thanks for that link! I did try another PS (that I had around and know to be working) but no luck there. I might as well just order up a good one.

sounds like the same thing that happens if the cpu fan is not pluged in. Make double sure that all your fan and power connections are pluged in.

Yeah, fans are plugged in because they start to spin but then stop. I did order up an Enermax power supply. Even if that is not the problem, I still needed a better one anyway. I have contacted ASUS tech support to see what they say... I mean I've had dead boards before where you push the power button and nothing happens, but on this when I push power the power and HD light flicker and fans spin for a moment, so something begins to happen then it just plain stops.

Here's another suggestion, you might re-check the connections from the mobo to the case (switches, lights, case speaker, etc)

Forgive me if I sound like a broken record, it's just that I've had problems like this before, and a mixed up connection is usually to blame. It sounds like all the parts are working fine, just that it's detecting something is wrong, so it's shutting down.

Thats ok, I know that everything has to be checked and re-checked! I've checked all of those out, everything seems connected properly. In fact they must be because when I push the power button it does something, and the lights flicker and speaker makes a chirp.
This is definitely bugging me!

wait, it's the case speaker making the chirp? I thought you had speakers pluged in! I'm not sure if your bios has it, but some asus bioses give a voice report during post. I don't know if yours is staying on long enough to post, but you could connect some speakers and try.

Yeah the case speaker chirps, also when I had the HD and CD drives plugged in the hard drive started to fire up but was cut off. No, its not staying on long enough to post... I plugged in speakers yesterday and when I pushed power they made a "pop" noise but thats it. When I push power it stays on for maybe half a second! :(

I am having the exact same problem with my newly built Asus K8N (Not E Model) ... nothing but a momentary whirl of the cpu fan then immediate shutdown ... I have swapped EVERY part and still nothing ... one curious note ... when I disconnected ALL power suppy connections, it does fire up but without any beeps or video or anything else (cpu fan is running) ... on the surface it appears to be a PS issue however I tried two separate power supplies from working comps and they run fine in those XP-based computers (they are crappy lightweight 300 & 350 watt units) ... could this mobo possibly need 500W ... isn't wattage still just wattage ... we're not talkin about scotch are we ... any suggestions ...

I doubt anyone is as dumb as I am ... sometimes you don't see the forest-for-the-trees ... 10 minutes after above-post I tried comp again ... however ... this time I plugged in the 4-pin 12 volt additional power lead to the mobo ... BAM ... off she/he went ... what a dope ... I hate to admit this but I never backtrack on the highway and similarly rarely pay attention to new features (I always thought this 4-pin connector had something to do with remote powering of machine) ... hopefully I haven't wasted too many peeps time .... and .... hopefully some other noob out there reads this and says "OH, that's why my computer runs like crap ... I need to connect this other cable" ... funny thing is ... I'm running 3 other comps as you read this and none of them have that extra 12 volt cable hooked up ... go figure .... peace!

Sounds like you don't have the extra 4 pin 12 supply plugged into the mother board. It will do exactly what you described without the extra power supply cable plugged in. You do not need a 500Watt supply to run this board. I have a 450W supply with 6SATA hard drives and 2 optical drives and have no trouble with it. In the interest of not going obsolete, I hope that you ordered an ATX2 supply that can supply more than 30A on the 12 volt line. It uses a 24 pin plug but it wil plug right into the mother board with the extra pins just outside of the mother board connector. All connected pins have the same voltages as the ATX 20 pin connector
