i was really looking into getting this card but the 2gb is holding me back. I'm gonna drop $450 to get a card held back by its VRAM?:( I would honestly just continue keeping my 5870 after 3 years this year but the 1gb VRam is really holding me back, i imagine the same thing will happen with the GTX 670, i'll be regretting that 2gb in 2-3 years time even though the card will still be rock solid. BF3, Crysis 2, & Sky Rim with mods already hit 1.5gb ram, some even use up all 2gb, and that's THIS year.:(

Why doesn't Asus make a 3/4gb version?

I think it is silly to worry about 2gb holding you back at 1920x1080. during those upcoming 2 or 3 years, having a 4gb card will have likely done nothing more for you and at that point you will want to upgrade anyway.

2GB isn't going to hold you back, unless you are on ultra high res multi monitors. There are 4GB versions, but that is a pointless purchase for just one card and one screen.

i said the same thing 3 years ago, but now i AM regretting only getting 1 gb on my 5870 instead of the 2gb version. I didn't think it'd last me 3 years, but seriously the rate of development in the video game industry has slowed down to make this is a reality.

well technically a 5870 has not even been out 3 years but even getting 2.5 years out a of card is a pretty good run. if I had a 5870, 1gb or 2gb, then I would want to upgrade anyway at this point.

why should i upgrade? its still hitting 45-50 FPS in BF3 with AA off @ 1080p.

The only thing is that high res texture mods in Crysis 2 and Skyrim DO consume more than 1gb of ram. When i bought it 2.5 years ago it was $370, and its lasted me this long. I hope to do the same if im spending another $400 on a video card!

2.5 years ago nothing came close to 1gb of VRAM, so i never thought anything of it. Nowadays there are mods that CAN hit 2gb of Vram! Not tomorrow, NOW (Crysis 2 & Skyrim with mods)! So i can only imagine how things will be in 2 years.

The GTX 670 needs atleast 3gb of ram if its to last comfortably for 2.5 years like my 5870.

well I do sort of see your point. a 5870 is not much slower than my card except in a few games. even 2.5 years ago though we did have games like GTA 4, Oblivion with mods, Fallout 3 with mods, STALKER Clear Sky and a couple others where we were hitting near 1gb of vram and sometimes over.

a gtx670/gtx680 will not have 3gb of vram so 2gb or 4gb will be the options. personally I am going with a gtx670 2gb since I know its enough as I will upgrade to another card before it matters.

ideally i'd buy one now, and in 2-3 years SLI it. But even in SLI, its STILL limited to 2gb per card, so it'd be pointless on that end. 2xGTX670s in SLI would last for 3+years no doubt, but that 2gb barrier is a real dead end 2-3 years from now no matter how powerful the GPU is.:(

in 2-3 years, the last thing I would want to do is sli an outdated card. a single card at that time will match that with no multi gpu issues and less power consumption plus new features. sli has never really been a sensible upgrade path IMO and in most cases and only makes sense if you need the power of two cards from the start.

i would've agreed with you 2-3 years ago, but nowadays with the slow pace of video card/game development SLI/Crossfire seems the way to go. There is NO upgrade option for my 5870 in the $200-$350 range that would make any sense (other than gaining 10-15fps, which is hardly an upgrade).

If my 5870 is hitting 40-50fps in BF3, then 2x5870s would be getting in the 70s and 80s, so why would i bother upgrading to anything else? I'd hardly call such performance outdated! Also, 2xGTX 670s in SLI are so power efficient they draw only 350wt under load!!!!(paired with an ultra efficient Ivy bridge CPU) That would've been unimagineable 3 years ago for high end GPUs in SLI with a 4.5ghz Quadcore CPU!!! 350wt under load is just incredible!

Times have changed mate, the industry is no longer what it used to be! Having your video card last you for 3 years used to be a feat, and yet i expect no less from the GTX 670! However, that 2GB VRAM in 2 years is a gonna be a real hindrance especially when 2x GTX670s in 3 years will still smoke anything on the GPU end, but load up those high res textures and that 2gb barrier is gonna be a deal breaker. :(

I still disagree as 2-3 years from now I will want a new faster single gpu setup. I like new technology and new features so screw adding another old card at that time and dealing with any multi gpu issues. heck I doubt gtx680 cards will even be around in 3 years. once the gtx7xx cards come out that chip or its revision will be used in a mid range card with a mid range price tag making the gtx670/gtx680 obsolete.

to each his own, some people upgrade every 6 months as it suits their needs, money ain't a thing for them.

Actually, buying previous generation cards when new gen cards are released is often MUCH cheaper. I've seen some killer deals on the GTX5xx line. But again, to each his own.
