Asus G31 motherboard

Asus P5KPL $50

Great deal if you need either a replacement motherboard or are looking to upgrade on the cheap (e5200 for $73, 4GB G.Skill DDR2 for $45 - full system upgrade for $170).

I have a Q6600 and a Q9450 CPU with ECS motherboards that DO NOT WORK. The one crashes (ECS G31T-M) and the other locks up when you try and install and run a video card.

I cannot figure out how else to disble the on-board video for the ECS GF7050VT-M - IF that is the issue. It will simply lock up either in seconds AFTER Windows XP Pro has loaded or a few minutes later BUT it always locks up. I have tried other video cards (the one I want to use is a VisionTek 9450), I have tried other RAM, I have tried SEVERAL clean installs of Windows, and I have tried other power supplies and no go.

The ECS G31T-M did work for nearly eight months before it started to crash and that is the one I need to replace. I am looking for a solid MB for my son's PC that he uses for extensive gaming BUT I cannot afford much, maybe around a $100 or so right now.

I have two ANTEC power supplies (430 and a 500W), two matched RAM sets of 2GB but ought to upgrade to at least 4GB for him but right now I NEED your suggestions for a good deal on a MB....say, a P45 at least.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated!!!

Probably this one.
There's another version of it (ud3r) which is like $15 cheaper.
You could probably find a used on in the for sale section for cheaper...

I ordered.

I know there's a lot of DOA reports, but IMO most straight "DOAs" on motherboards are some CPU or RAM incompatibility (same thing with all those reviews of "DOA" RAM).

Ouch, all the recent DOA's are scaring me. Otherwise I love the legacy printer port, and want this board.

At least ASUS comes in and responds to some of the problem reviews and preopens a trouble ticket. That's a good thing.

How long does it take for an ASUS RMA ?

these MBs are only 30 days exchange or refund at NewEgg

Mine is ASUS P5e deluxe and it refuses to allow access to the BIOS; so i got a Rampage [open box] from NewEgg last night for $150 because i cannot wait 😛

I remember I bought a ton of asus boards for work one time and they all came with the cmos jumper in the clear position. Newegg had a lot of reports of the board not posting...

Zap lured me in...again.

The Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L is only $3 more and people seem to have a lower percentage of problems. Although no free shipping.

hmm, benefits of this over the GIGABYTE GA-G31M-ES2L for only a couple bucks more with better reviews????

I don't know, but it's almost a hobby of mine to find out stuff like this. 😀

Just got a shipping notice today. Tracking isn't active at UPS yet. Shipped from NJ, I'm in WI.

So would you recommend this or the Gigabyte mobo? I'm also kind of leery of the DOA issues.

sigh, I bought one anyhow. hope this doesn't turn out like my decision to buy a 1.5tb seabait.

I went to Microcenter and bought the Gigabyte mobo. We'll see how it runs this weekend. I also bought a Basiq PSU from Antec. How good are those things?

Basiq is made by FSP (Fortron). It isn't "crap" but it isn't as solid as their more expensive units. "Decent" is the word that comes to mind, not "good" like the EarthWatts.

A bit more, and no free freight but it has GbE...

The first ASUS one (P5KPL-AM/PS) has Gigabit, according to the specs as well as the picture of the box.
