Asus E608 8X DVD-ROM wont read CD's....

Asus E608 8X DVD-ROM wont read CD's ... but it reads DVD's and even burned DVD's just fine. This is the strangest problem I have ever encountered. I'm wondering if it's fixable or not, I've updated the firmware and it still doesn't recognize CD's when they are in the drive but it reads DVD's perfectly... I'm sure the drive is OOW (out of warranty) am I stuck or is there a way to try to get it to work with CD's as well?
