Asus DVD-E616P1 Issues

Hi everyone, I hope someone can help me out here. I recently took the plunge and made my first self-built computer. I have spent all day getting it running and everything is going like the clappers. For the record, the spec is:

3400+ Athlon64
Asus K8V Deluxe motherboard
1Gb (2 x 512mb) Corsair 3200LL RAM
256mb Sapphire Radeon 9800XT
120 Maxtor Diamondmax 120Gb Serial ATA drive (with hardrive cooler)
Samsung CD-RW
Asus DVD-Rom
etc
etc

Now everything is fine except for the DVD drive. It just refuses to work. Ironically, I have installed Windows XP Home Edition from the Asus DVD drive 3 times now (screwed up drivers during the build a couple of times). The drive always works for that, but once windows is actually installed and running the DVD drive won't go. It is detected ok and if I put a CD/DVD in the drive it tells me the name of disk thats in, but it wont autorun and won't actually play/run anything on the disk. All I get is a "win32" runtime error ro something like that.

I have all the latest drivers and bios updates installed.
