Can the Zalman NB47J be used w/out a fan? How well does it cool compared to the fan/heatsink combo they install "if its working of course"...

Cuz mines broken too

asus makes the most boards
using crappy fans saves them 3 cents
times that up and its more than you make in a year 🙂 😛

realistically, they are in a jam because they cant make the sinks too big cause it blocks the cards, they dont want to spend the money on better fans because the amount of people appreciating it is low and more specifically, people who find it an issue will spend the extra to get a zalman.......
my idea is rather than make the sinks higher and block cards, they should make the sinks wider, and chew up space between pci slots, over small chips, whatever they can manage

Ha, if you're doing coke that explains why you're freaking out. I think maybe you shouldn't talk about drug use here, though.

umm, the drink...
everything is called Coke down here.

Yeah it'll work just fine. Make sure your motherboard has mounting holes around the NB or otherwise you'd need some thermal adhesive to attach this particular heatsink.

i have had my a8n-sli deluxe for 4 months now, and the fan is still spinning fine. this is my first asus board and would consider buying another if it met my requirements. you could just throw another 40x10mm fan on there for about $10. I see no reason to never buy asus again, i think you are over exaggerating and need to spend more time finding girls (or any other social activity) then worrying about chipset fans.

Is that an actual spec for a consumer board?

All I know is my case fans (5 of em), ps fans (2), CPU fan and radeon 7200 fan have been on for almost 2 solid years. 24/7

The bigger fans cost so I can see then lasting longer but the small radeon fan is about what would be on a chipset (40 mm or so). Its lasted, so the asus fan should if its quality..

BTW I have nothing against asus, my multimedia comp is an old asus. but neither it nor my game rig mobo have chipset fans. Just a huge heatsink on the soyo dragon mobo, and a smaller hs on the older asus

my chipset fan went out on my abit board after about a month . got a fan to replace it no problems ever since. replace the fan big deal. or do passive cooling as the gentlemen mentioned above.

I've been running that passive heatsink on my northbridge for a few months now. Go into the case/cooling and search for NB47J or "A8N chipset" and you'll find a thread filled with posts from happy users.

The problem with the OP theory is that eliminates pretty much every mobo that uses an active NB fan/heatsink. As has been said, just get a replacement that's passive and enjoy the silence.

Get a passive heatsink, e.g. the Zalman.

Asus cannot do that even if they had the money because it would block somebody's components, so they have to stay flat.

I never had any luck with asus, the last couple of bunch I got from newegg wouldn't even post
is thhis how bad their products are???

I kinda felt that way until I found out about the Zalman NB47J and how good it works. I bought that, installed it, bam, no more problems.

Not to mention it's quieter than any fan-based solution.

However, my case design has a 120mm fan in the front blowing cool air over my HDs, and right after those, the NB47J. I bet that helps to cool it, eh?

I've got the same MoBo, and my NB fan is quieter than my CPU fan.

Get a Zalman NB47 and a case fan to blow some air over it. Simple. Quiet. Effective. Problem solved.

anyone know what actually happens to the fan? mine will start making noise like two cats killing eachother in my pc. i turn it off for a while and then it's ok for a day or so... so random. anyone know what's wrong with it? is it the heat?
