Hi all,

Question. I have an ASUS CUSL2. What is the fastest PIII CPU I can use with this motherboard?

Actually, depending on how hardcore you want to get, you can run the PIII-S 1400Mhz on this board. You can get one of those Powerleap adapters for it. They'll sell you the adapter and a processor combo for about $100 more than the cost of the CPU alone.

The fastest CPU you could use without modifying the board or buying an adapter would be the P3 CuMine 1.13 GHz, although that particular CPU was recalled for being an unstable piece of junk.

My suggestion, based on personal experience, is to find a P3 866 cC0 stepping 133 MHz bus CPU, get a good heatsink, and overclock the hell out of it. I have one running at 1202 MHz. That, or you could modify the board and stick a Tualatin in there... :)

Sorry 'bout the last post. Non-post, actually. Hehe!

I presently have a PIII 866. How do I determine what the stepping is?

While your 866 PIII is probably cDO, you can look it up for sure at the following Intel site

Intel CPU ID/Stepping

While it's correct the fastest chip that will run on your board is the 1GHz PIII Cu, a good cpu will o/c to ~1200 with good cooling. To use the newer Tualatin PIIIs you'll need something like the ASUS TUSL-C board.

Which means the fastest P3 you can put is an 1100 with 100MHz FSB... OR you could mod a tualatin and overclock it it like me. :) Not worth getting the powerleap anymore considering how P3s are obsolete but are still more expensive than some P4s... :(

Those "obsolete" P3s cost more than some P4s because, despite having lower clock and FSB speeds, they are faster than said P4s. Not to mention that they run cooler and support SMP. :)

That maybe true to some extent... but some Northwoods are still cheaper than P3s... but the only P3 i'm probably thinking of are the Tualatins with 512K... :D Nevertheless... a 1.6A overclocked past 2.4 is surely faster than my 1.33 P3... :(

What would you have to do to modify the CUSL board to get it to run a Tualatin?

Easiest way is to get one of these. You can pick one up here I can't link directly to it from where I am now, but I think they are about $30. It's listed as being compatible here

Hey... nice thread for me ...

I was wondering if I could get more outta my old CUSL2

Click MyIntelbox

Is anyone here actually using any of the adapters?

Do they get hot?

Looks like my clips for my Volcano7+ may not reach ?

Think this one is as good as any?

one for $15

(under motherboards)

Someone told me about this: you can phone up Powerleap and they will actually sell you just the adaptor so you can put whatever chip you want in it.
