Asus CUSL2 or CUV4X

HI!

I need to build a simple database server.

I was thinking of using 2* 256Mb PC133 ECC Memory and Buying the Asus CUSL2.
But I discover that the CUSL2 does not support ECC memory.

I didn't find out from the specs of the CUV4X that it support but I was told so.

I can live up with some reboots from time to time
The only thing that shouldn't get corrupted is the new data that will be writen to disk (a few record each day).

What do you think I shell do:
- Buy PC133 non-ECC memory and an CUSL2
- Buy PC133 ECC memory and an CUV4X (or other).

Chances of getting corrupted data are much lower than they used to be. These days, RAM is generally reliable enough not to need ECC....you will only find ECC in servers that handle a huge amount of traffic.

I would go with the CUSL2.

You may also want to reconsider if you want the CUV4X since it uses the VIA chipset. From what I hear that chipset has pretty sloppy memory performance, which could have an impact on a db server's performance.

This has been beaten to death. My scores are fine using Sisoft Sandra. p3v4x, Cas2 @ 133, FSB @ 133, settings by SPD (no changes in BIOS, no third party utilities like H. Oda); score: 370/420 MB/s

I agree with AndyHui, get the CUSL2 unless your server is going to be getting really heavy traffic. In that case you might want ECC RAM, or might even want to consider a motherboard other than the two you mentioned (a server class mb such as the Asus CUR-DLS, although I don't know too much about it, e.g. stability, reliability, performance).

Also consider this excerpt from the AnandTech i815/i815e mb roundup a while back:

Memory expansion on the i815 is a bit tricky in some situations. Intel's specs call for a maximum of 2 PC133 DIMM's or 3 PC100 DIMM's. Some motherboard manufacturers have been able to push this to 3 PC133 DIMM's without a problem, although others have a number of stability issues with such a configuration. In fact, many of the boards we tested for this roundup had stability issues with even one PC133 DIMM if it was operating in CAS 2 mode. Our guess is that it is a result of the immaturity of the i815 motherboard designs some manufacturers had no trouble with such a setup. We were able to run 3 DIMM's at CAS 2 / PC133 without a problem on the ASUS CUSL2, but this was the only board that could handle this

So while the CUSL2 handled the 3 DIMMs at 133MHz in the review, it's not officially supported, something to keep in mind if you were thinking about adding one more DIMM in addition to the two you have planned.

HI again!
The database have a bit massive querys. (I expect about 20 to 50 users at the same time)
But not many inserts. I expect about 30 new records (about 1 to 2kb each) each day.
What I need to preserve is the new data that will be written.
If by a chance a query returns a miss data there is not a problem (this is a search database).

The money is not a big problem.
But I don't think that a &quot;> $600&quot; server board is worth it.
Something less then $250 would be fine.

What I realy want is Fiability and performance by this order.
I know all that I shell buy except: Board and Memory.

By know my only question is: Do I need the ECC memory?
