Asus Cdrom

So I put a cd in, any cd with info on it. I close the drive. The light goes on and it starts making the sounds that it does when its working. The sounds calm down in 15 seconds, and the light stays on. Alot of times I can't read cd's. Other times I can. I pushed hard on the connections to make sure they're tight. It's an asus 50x $40 cdrom i got at xmas time last year. I installed the right drivers for it, win2k sp2, mobo drivers, everything. it's on the same eide band as my 8x/4x/32x ricoh burner. Anybody got any ideas why it's so whacky? Is it already f***n dying on me?

Hmm, I have a setup with the same drive in W2k-sp2. I have not had any problems with it. I don't recall any W2k drivers for it. It worked right out of the box. I'd move it to another channel and make sure DMA is enabled.

Sounds like you may have a bad one. I have the same drive and it is almost a years old and it work fine. I have also put them a lot of the computers I build with no issues.

There seem to have been a whole bunch of 45x and 50x drives from ASUS lately that have had similar problems. All the connections are fine, but it just won't read/recognise the CD after you have inserted it.

I got my 45x drive about the same time as kelesh and I have had similar problems. I can only do 1 successful CD insertion out of 10 or so, for all types: original pressed CDs, mixed mode CDs, music CDs, CDRs and CDRWs.
