I'd recommend you buying from 1toppc.com. I just bought a M5N from them last week, friendly service, assembled the spec I want, and shipped the next day. They price is very reasonable, and plus they sell 2MB L2 Cache Pentium-M instead of the 512k or 1MB most other vendors sell.

This set up is only about $1639 (Free shipping)

I'm doing the same thing.

Here is a review that put a m6ne together.

http://legitreviews.com/reviews/whitebox2/

They don't seem to think it was that hard. I've heard other experinces with this laptop to say it was quite easy. mine will be here tomarrow, if you would like, I can tell you how it goes, take pics step by step. Just let me know .

Ok I took a few pics, not as many as I was meaning too, anyways I'll try to explain the entire thing. Over all I would say it was a breeze.

To take off the keyboard there are two screws in the bottom, you take those out, then on the top there are three little levers. I took a small watch screwdriver, with a flat head, and you press straight back. as you release each one the keyboard will pop up just a bit. After you take those out, there is a small ribbon cable that attached to the keyboard, be careful not to jerk the keyboard up, gently, until you can release the ribbon. then you see this:

keyboard taken off

Ok moving on, next you have to take off the bar with the power button on it, this is the only step where it kind of threw me for a loop, I didn?t' screw anything up at all, it just took me awhile to figure why it wasn't coming loose. There are two screws in the centerish top, take them out. :light:

Screws to take out trim

Then ever so carefully on the sides, you can see where the trim with the powerbutton ends, pry up, it takes a bit of pressure to get it to release, do this on both sides. This trim is connected to the motherboard by a wire, a short one, so be careful, while you detach that wire, its dead center on the trim.

Next there is a cover over the heatsink and zif socket, it covers about half of it, just slide it off. Next there are 4 screws holding on the heatsink to the zif socket. Take those out, notice by the holes in the heatsink, there are numbers 1,2,3,4.

Heatsink pci

Then at the bottom center there is a grey circle with a slot in the center, it should be turned counter clockwise to allow you to put the processor in. Once you do that put the processor in, its a zif, it should just drop in. Then if you want to use the thermal pad they supply just take off the plastic covering it up, or apply AS or whatever. The put the heatsink back. now put the screws in, tighting them in a diagonal pattern, like you would on a car with 4 locknuts on the wheels. Once you get those tight, its a simple matter of sliding the cover back in place.

Then if you want to put in a Mini pci card, for wireless or what not. On the left in the picture above it is labeled. There is a screw holding that cover down, at the very top. Once you take it out. slide the cover down. Now for wireless, the black wire goes to the "main" and the white wire to "aux"

Then put the ram in. easy. Next all you have to do is put it all back together, and your done.

It was a very easy build. It took me, going slow, about 40 min. And it was actually pretty fun, and interesting. I would definitely do it again. I skipped the hard drive, bc its pretty self explanatory.
Anyways, I hope that helps.

I think barebones notebooks are great, especially one that is as nice as the asus. My only gripe is no integrated bluetooth option. I have free gprs access with my cell and the best way to connect is BT. Sure you could get a dongle or a PCMCIA card but ugh, dongles, ugh, cards, I don't want things sticking out.:p I wonder if I could hotwire a Dell bluetooth module to the motherboard? Maybe I'll take this to the HT forum.

Here is my possible setup:
m6ne - 882
2200 - 34
1.8 - 425
60/7200 - 182
1g - 196
dvd slot load? - 146
--------------------------
$1,865 - ouch. + BT~$25

That 1.8 dothan kills me.:(
