Hiya guys...

Im really at a loss....I WANT to go for the Neo2, since it is one of the newest MoBo's out...but there seems to be some issues with it.

As a beginner builder I dont know If I want to get a board that I will have to fiddle with to get working, and I also hear the MSI is VERY picky about RAM.

What would you guys suggest for a noobie looking to build a system that wont give him much trouble at the beginning?

My inclination at first was to get the Newest, but now Im looking for the most stable (which may actually be the same thing..i dont know).

So please..any suggestions are welcome, and if you happen to have an FX-53 system running nice and stable, would you mind sharing your specs? particularily your MoBo and RAM?

Help me make this decision FINALLY!!!!

Thanks!!

I have both the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and the ASUS A8V Deluxe WiFi Edition. I too wanted to get the nForce 3 ultra chipset for my Athlon64 and decived to purchase both boards to see what would occur. Let me just say that for me the ASUS A8V is running much more stable and the temperatures of the CPU are at 116°F with the stock Heatsink/Fan.

While on the other hand the MSI board reported temperatures of 140°F + which really concerned me. Even though I am 99% sure that it is the BIOS misreading the CPU Temperature I didn't want to chance my new 64 bit.

So, I switched back the the A8V Deluxe until MSI get's there BIOS figured out to report proper temps.

thanks for your response!!

one quick question if you dont mind...

I noticed there is a WiFi, and a Non-WiFi...Is there ANY distinction between the two besides the wireless capabilities? (that IS what WiFi is ..isnt it?)

Thanks

I also bought both. The Asus is the one I went with. The MSI was nice, but difficult to set up.

The Asus is almost plug and play.

The asus does not overclock, until board revision 2.0, but if that isn't a concern, than get it now.

Hi,

I have an ASUS A8V rev1.02, which I am pleased with.

Only the absence of a working AGP/PCI lock bugs me.

Have u had any luck getting the MSI to work with ur 64Bit?

If so, which of the boards do u think is better for stock speed, and moderate overclocking?

Thanks.

There's a new bios for the MSI Neo2 available on MSI's site. It's ver. 1.2 and addresses the temperature misreading and adds 0.5 increments to the Cell Core? settings.
I'm in the process of setting up a new system also and have struggled with the decisions on many items incl. wich MB to go with.I'm pretty much set on a 939 socket CPU (3500) and the MSI Neo2 d/t the good reviews it's gotten.Main complaints have been the temp. reading and some memory type issues and SATA RAID set-ups.
Because I'm not planning on any RAID set-up and the newly released bios addresses the temp. reading issue,I'll have to say this board is definately the "pick of the litter" as far as 939 boards go.All the reviews and customer/user postings support my belief.
My only gripe would be that it doesn't support PCI-E ... yet

go with the Neo2, flash the bios to 1.2, you won't be disappointed, trust me.

Yeah I have the MSI Neo2 1.2 bios and a 3500+ , it flies! no stability problems now (touch wood).

Just a few issues with memory slots (use 1 and 2 not 3 and 4 with two sticks) , and use sata 4 and 3 instead of 1 and 2. Ps2 peripherals don't work for me, and quite a few other people, seems to be a problem with the standby voltage to them , atleast with my mobo PSU combination.

some people have reported problems with raid, but i think 1.2 and driver updates fixed that also.

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum 54G.
AMD Athlon64 3500+ (DH7 CG) Bios v1.2
Gainward Golden Sample Ultra 2400 (Nvidia 6800 GT).
2*512 Kingston KVR400X64C3A/512 CL 3 in Dimm 1 2.
PS2 Intellipoint Microsoft optical mouse.
USB Keyboard (PS2 keyboards don't work).
Antec Trueblue Truepower 480W (+5V 38A/+12V 22A/+3.3V 30A).
MSI DVD-burner DR8P IDE.
MSI Wifi card in Comm slot.
Samsung DVD-Rom SD616E.
Maxtor MaXLine Plus II 250GB S-ATA in last Sata slot 8MB cache 7200RPM.
Windows XP Pro SP1.
Lian Li PCV1100 Case.

Interesting thread.

I ordered and just got delievered a brand new MSI K8N S939; i'm not sure whether to return it and keep my Asus A8V rev1.02, or sell that and go MSI.

I want best stock speed, and good overclocking. Got AMD 3500 right now, hopefully FX53 soon.

Which one should I go for?

How high has anyone got their FSB with the MSI?

MSI K8N S939 or better the upcoming Epox 9NDA3+, also on nForce3 250 Ultra chipset.

I will switch to Epox as soon as it reaches the stores.

dacull is up there knocking on wood, and I can tell you that MSI is not at the top of my speed dial list right now. Should I kick myself and get another MSI board? Well, this has some awfully shiny rims on it....even dig the "parallel to the top memory slots" , but.....erg.... hopefully you won't have issues...OR...you can speak Chinese !!!

The trouble is when Amandtech do reviews they are using 1 motherboard, who is to say that they got unlucky & had a bad motherboard or months later the Manufacturers have tweaked these current boards.

I've just ordered the Abit AV8-3rd Eye, people on the forums I use have reported 100% stability running at 250HTT x 10 & also the UK CustomPC Magazine specs this board as been the best overall in terms of overclockability.

I got fed up of waiting for the Asus A8V Revision 2 to become available in the UK & I didnt fancy adding to the horror storys of using the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum with my X800XT PE due to the lag problems everyone is having from using this combination within games such as Wolfenstein:ET, Call of Duty & any other games which require the need for Punk Buster.

Abit AV8-3rd Eye on its way.... ;)
