Asus A8n-SLI vs Asus A8N-SLI SE Whats newer/better?

I have recently been looking at buying a new mobo and have narrowed it down to the Asus A8N-SLI (or SE) and I was wondering which mobo has the best or most recent bios as I'm going to be buying an AMD Opteron 165 and I hear its a 50/50 chance of the board recognizing it. I'm currently running an AMD Socket A Athlon XP 3200+ so during this upgrade I do NOT want to have to buy a lower end CPU just to flash my bios (or borrow one) nor do I want to have to ship my bios/board to Asus to have them reflash it for me.

Can anyone let me know which is the best choice, I dont need all the flashy stuff on the Premium board as it offers things I'll probably never use. No one knows when the new A8R32-MVP Deluxe will hit US markets, and from compairing the prices from Euros to USD I doubt I'll want to spend that much.

LOL at your username.

50/50 change that the Opteron 165 is recognized by the board?? I was going to go with this mobo/CPU combo for my next build, but if that is true, I'm not so sure.

The board WILL work with the CPU, but some older versions of the BIOS wont recognize the CPU and will not post, thus not being able to reflash the BIOS. This is the information I got directly from Asus (before I looked into the SE as a potental solution).

At any rate if you can flash the BIOS (or if your lucky and get a bios revision high enough to post with the cpu) you will be fine and dandy.

Well, I had an Opteron 148 that ran fine on the stock BIOS of the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium if that helps. But I'm pretty sure that with a BIOS update, the board you're talking about will work fine with the Opteron 165.

It could be a headache, but if you've got a local PC shop then worst case you can stroll down there and talk them into lending you an A64 for a few minutes of work if it doesn't go right first time. I'd put your odds much higher than 50/50 btw.

i'm sure they won't do it for free considering some places charge $20 for cpu installations. but it is a good thought...maybe borrowing a friend's?

I dont need it put in for me I can do it but I need a cpu to put in to update the bios, and there is no question that the new bios will work with the operon 165 its just getting it to post on stock bios is my only issue, but I still need an answer to my original question of WHICH motherboard would be best....

A8N-SLI or the A8N-SLI SE???

ok.. maybe I'm not making myself clear, or people are choosing to not even read the post.

The deluxe will offer the SAME problem with a 50/50 chance of the motherboard not posting with the opteron 165, if it will not post I CANT UPDATE THE BIOS.

I chose the A8N-SLI because it gives me everything I need and nothing I dont. the Deluxe model wont give me anything more that I will even take advantage of.

Now, I ask again....

which of THESE TWO MOTHERBOARDS will work best for me and my situation..

Asus A8N-SLI or the Asus A8N-SLI SE

look at my sig. i run fine
Go with SE... looks pretty good. Quite honestly, i think the ones they ship now have the newer bios and you shouldnt have a problem

Ya I think yrou right, I'll suck it up and just get the Premium, less risk of an older bios on those, especially seeing as how fast theyt fly out of newegg the chances of getting some old bios is slim ( I think the A8N-SLI Premium is the best selling mobo currently available)

This will be my rig:

Asus A8N-SLI Premium
AMD Opteron 165 (OCed to 2.5-2.7 depending)
Asus x1900XT (just got this from newegg today, was back in stock for 8 hours on newegg on friday lol)
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS (might upgrade to the SB X-Fi extreme music soon)
2g Kingston Hyper X ram
150g WD 7200 ata

I think is a 50/50 chance of recognizing the opty as dual-core. Most old bios's will POST, although your CPU will be running as a single-core until you flash the BIOS.

Yup, even if the bios dosn't recognize it, it'll still post and recognize it as an AMD64 chip. Just use the computer your using now and get the latest bios, then flash the mobo when it comes with the AMD chip in it.

Well, my info came straight from Asus tech support (not that tech support isnt a bunch of moneys answering phones and hitting random buttons on a keyboard for answers like a magic 8 ball) so you just take it with a grain of salt.

If the board will post thats all I want lol.

Hey... i have a premium that ive had for a couple months now. I didnt have a problem with the bios. I dont think you will either. And newegg is great about RMA's so even if it doesnt work, you can get a new one that will. Dont worry about it.

thanks for the info to all,.. will also be getting this one -> ASUS A8N-SLI Premium.; based on what has been posted on the thread.
