Asus A8N-SLI Premium & 4400+ = No Post

Hi All,

If I connect PSU to mobo and hit the 'on' switch then the new-fangled 'Post Reporter' on my shiney new Asus A8N-SLI helpfully tells me "No CPU".

When I put my supa-dupa dual core AMD 4400+ in, then I get nothing, zip, nada, absolutely didly squat. No Post, no beeps, no helpful Post Reporter recorded message.

Q: is it the chip or the mobo? (Or the PSU?)

The power LED on the mobo lights up, but the one on the case doesn't. If I connect a low speed fan then the power switches off after a couple of seconds (presumably current draw is insufficient?).

The mobo is currently sitting on cardboard so no short. I haven't got a spare CPU/mobo/PSU to test my components on.

Anyone got any ideas / had similar experiences?

Any suggestions much appreciated!

Phil

Most likely reason: the board does not have the newest BIOS which supports dual-core processors. You will probably need to a.) get your hands on a single-core A64 so you can drop it in & flash the BIOS, or b.) get a new BIOS chip from Asus.

If you ordered the board at a brick-and-mortar store, you can probably take it back and ask them to help you with this. Otherwise, it'll be a fun little project.

I was under the impression that it should still post, but only recognise one core. This would then allow me to flash the bios to get both cores.

Sadly bought online, and don't know anyone with a spare socket 939 proc. Any ideas as to how I could test your theory?

Thanks,

Phil

Honestly I'm not sure if it's supposed to still work with just one core or not, but the only way to know for sure is to drop a single-core CPU in there and see what happens.

If you have a PC Club or Fry's or somesuch near where you are, take your motherboard over there and ask them if they can help you out with testing the board.

usually most boards require the bios update before they will post, I have found at work that Gigabyte models based on the NF4 chipset,Asus boards and ECS board will not post with a dual core chips.
Gigabyte now ships boards that have a suitable bios.
this is a pretty common problem, you may have to find a A64 to fix the problem..or you could take it to any reasonable computer store and have it flashed for a small fee, Usually here at work we will do it for free if the customer has bought the board from us or charge the lowest rate (up to 15mins AU$15) to fix it if it doesn't come from us.
