Asus a8n-SLI + 4x1GB Ram?

If you use 2T, yes. It would crash at boot when using a 1T command rate, but at 2T it works great. Be sure you're using an OS that can actually address 4 gigs.

I am planning on running Vista 64 so that shouldn't be a problem. Is it even worth upgrading to 4GB if I am going to be forced to run at 2T? That sounds like a pretty significant penalty.

Only in benchmarking. On day to day useage, you won't notice it. Well, I did not on my A8R32-MVP and 4x512 megs sticks..

The memory speed loss will be well compensated by less slow HDD access for sure. I would not go back to 1 gigs even at some memory speed loss.
