hey bakeybake' ..had the same trouble with a Wireless PCI Adapter, somehow its drivers became corrupted when i installed new wireless adsl modem, ended up re-installing XP....still wouldn't work, only thing that worked was to change to another pci slot... not happy :|

Gas anyone had a problem booting up? I mean when you press the spacebar (wen set to turn on via spacebar) or when pressing the power button, NOTHING happens?

This has happened a few times to me and it is just strange. After a few times trying it turns on.. all wires are in tact and tight. Anyone ever seen or heard of this?


Thanks for the OC'ing links.. I actually found a few and got my CPU running 2750mhz no problem.

My ram won't run dual channel, OR 1T which is killing my overall performance, even an OCZ guy said I should be running dual mode, and then be able to run 1T, but I can't. Oh well.. It is probably due to my strange ram config (2x 256, 1x 512mb).. but he said it should work and it doesn't.

You will be lucky if you can get your ram to 240-245 using 1T. I say this because this board has a 1T bug where memory can be overclocked to around 240 before you get errors/BSOD. The only fix to is use 2T. Why won't Asus fix this already. I guess since this board isn't their flagship they don't give a crap. I should have bought a NF4 Ultra-D or Neo4

Using (2x 256, 1x 512mb) combination won't give you dual channel. You have use matched pairs.

Hi guys. Advice appreciated on my settings.
My PC is not overclocked except for the memory timings of 2 3 3 6
1T/2T Memory Timing is at 2T, 2.75 volts on the ram.
I'm trying to learn what all the settings mean and do.
Anyway, I ran Memtest and Prime95, about 6 hours for each one, ran fine.

Playing Battlefield 2 has booted the PC after about 15 minutes of play last night twice, not just a crash to the desktop, but a complete boot. I set the ram latency back to 2.5, and so far, no more boots. I realize there are a gazillion variables at work here, and it may not be ram related, but shouldn't I be able to run a latency of 2 with my setup?
I have read some postings where the recommended latency is 2.5 with AMD setups, while others say 2.0 should be OK. And how about the 1T/2T Memory Timing ?
I also have downloaded the latest drivers for my 6800GS

I have issues abound... I used the thread search, but didn't find anything releant, so forgive me if this stuff has already been covered.

I get a blue screen once every few days... "BAD_POOL_HEADER". It happens almost every time I'm copying much data from either hard drive (I'm using two SATA drives) to a USB device, or across the network. I've found a little bit on it via Google, but nothing helpful.

I've been getting blue screens frequently saying that nv4_disp has entered an infinite loop. Googling has indicated that this would be a problem with my GeForce 6600 video card, but I've tried this card in another computer, and I haven't gotten it to happen on it. This problem only occurs when I'm using two monitors at the same time. Might there be something related to the motherboard increasing the chances of this happening?

Finally... Windows won't boot up properly with anything other than my keyboard and mouse connected to the USB ports. If I have a webcam, PDA, camera, thumb drive, or external hard drive connected, it just sits at the Windows startup screen. It *does* eventually load windows, though. I found that out by hitting the power switch, and coming back to the PC an hour later. That session of Windows ran extremely slowly though, like my processor went from a 3000+ down to an 800 MHz or something. Windows would also "lock up" for a few seconds, and then everything would be OK. I resolved that situation by rebooting without any USB devices other than my keyboard and mouse connected. *However*, it doesn't even boot up properly, then. I frequently have to attempt startup 5 or 6 times before Windows will load "normally"... it just sits at the loading screen, "spinning its wheels" for the longest time.

I've tried reinstalling Windows several times, playing around with different combinations of drivers, but I've not found any "magic combination" that solves my problems.

Help?!?!?

You might want to increase voltage to either 2.8 or 2.85 volts.

Well, I can't say I'm happy with ASUS. This is my second board. I had the P4-PE, now I have the A8N-E rev.2

I've suffered with:
Northbridge fan failure -- day30
suspend not functioning, reboots not functioning in XP
failed bios update to 1010, backed to 1008
northbridge, new fan failure -- day 60
northbridge, new new fan failure -- day 90, now I'm living with the constant grinding noise
failed BIOS update to 1011 -- board is now a brick
I'm forced to pay $20 for shipping of new bios (overnight) to get my system working again...no guarantee that it will work...

I'm now in the market for a new board...thinking of heading over to MSI or DFI.

I can't see buying anything for ASUS ever again.

<sigh> This is frustrating. I just discovered, after about 10 minutes of troubleshooting, that it won't boot up *at all* if there is any CD in the optical drive... whether that CD is bootable or not.

Do you mean it won't POST or just wont load windows. I suppose you already did the f8 "load last configuration that worked" option if it gets through POST. If you get it to load in safe mode, disable the n force 4 firewall and activearmour. They're both bad news.

When there's media in the optical drive, it completes post, but never stops looking at the optical media for a bootstrap (since it is higher priority than the hard drives). The second I hit the eject button, it decides to boot from a hard drive. This mobo used to work OK with this optical drive (didn't have this problem), and the drive is still working OK with other motherboards. It also doesn't appear to matter what kind of media is in the drive for the problem to occur.

Other than when I'm experiencing the optical drive issue, the startup problem is after control is passed to windows. Safe mode always works fine, no delay at all. It's just "normal" (or whatever it's called) that causes problems. I've never installed the NF4 firewall / activearmour, as I read up on this mobo before I built this PC.

I have a strange problem. I get blue screen very often after cold boot when loading windows. It only happens when I start the computer after it have been turned off for some time.

I tried to turn the NCQ off and it seem to work, it loaded windows without problems. But it's not stable, I get errors running prime95 torture test (blend) and eventually the computer restarts by itself.
But after the computer have been running for about 10 minutes prime95 is running without problems and everything is very stable.
So when cold booting I use to enter bios and wait 10 min before I start windows.

I have the latest BIOS with default settings and the latest nforce4 drivers from nvidia
My compontents are:
Asus A8N-E
amd 64 San Diego 4000+
XFX Geeforce 7800GTX
G.Skill PC3200 2Gb
Maxtor DiamondMax10 300GB

I would be very grateful for any help.

BRAND NEW BUILD --- Safe to OC?

Just got my new build going and tried the factory OC options on the A8N-E.

Used the AI OVERCLOCK option, overclocked to 10% and plan on using this as my default setting.

Is it safe to do this using the stock AMD HSF?? Or should I buy an aftermarket?

Stock HSF is perfectly fine for overclocking. I replaced it only because of the noise issue.

And I recommend not using the Asus AI overclock - do everything manually.

You get much more control of your settings and you can reach better overclock scores.

With a 4200+, you can hit 2.80GHz easily on air! And don't worry, the stock HSF will keep the CPU cool. AMD64s are designed to run very cool and your load temperature should not go past 45C (depending on your case set up).

If you do want to consider an aftermarket HSF, I suggest the Arctic Cooler Freezer 64 Pro. It's a 92mm fan, that runs at 2200 RPM (it's quiet) but is designed to keep the CPU at low temps during load.

Well, I've been thinking it's time for me to get out of the AGP age. The A8N-E is the motherboard that I'm most interested in, after doing a bit of reading. I happened to notice that newegg is selling refurbished A8N-Es (Link).

Just wondered if it would be a bad idea to get that rather than the retail version? It'd be nice to save a little money if possible.

I just spent 43 minutes doing nothing but trying to get it to boot up. 🙁 I finally got it to boot up by removing *all* of the drivers, and letting windows reinstall them on the next reboot.

I have this funny feeling that I'm going to have to do the same thing next time...

Hey guys,
I need a 2nd opinion here, or maybe a technical explanation on why.
I'm running A8N-E with X2 3800+, and able to run @2.4 ghz (240x10, HTT 4X, DDR333 setting -> 200 mhz actual, 2-3-3-8, 1T, 2.85Vram, 1.45 Vcore) with no problem at all, pass Memtest, PCmarks, 12 hrs Prime95 stable, Play games, Edit Video etc.

So I thought, hey let's bump this to 2.5 ghz (250x10) and see if it is still stable. So I changed the setting to: 250x10, HTT 3X, DDR333, 2.5-3-3-8, 1T, 2.85Vram & 1.475 Vcore. Guess what?, I can't even boot to windows. It freezed at the first screen boot-up (the CPU, Ram, HD info). So I thought let's relaxed the RAM a little, so I changed the setting 2T, and increase Vram to 2.9V. But Problem still exists, Can't even boot to windows. Then I relaxed the RAM setting further, DDR266 -> 166 Mhz actual, 1T, 2.9V, 1.475Vcore, and everything ran PERFECT. Able to complete all PCMARK tests, and 12 hrs Prime95 stable @250x10. Then for the fun of it, I changed the Ram setting again to DDR333 -> 208mhz actual, 2T, 3-4-4-10, and this time I was able to boot to windows, but Freeze when I ran Sandra RAM test.

So from this I can only conclude, the RAM is the culprit. What I don't understand is, the RAM, Ballistix DDR500, should be able to withstand DDR333 setting -> 208 Mhz actual as the RAM is rated @250, 2.5-4-4-10, 2.8V. Has anybody came across this problem? I know about the 1T/2T issue with A8n-E @240 & above, but at this point I think it's more towards RAM incompatibility with the Mobo.

Any ideas? BTW, here is my rig spec:
A8N-E
X2-3800+ with Panaflo XP120 (31 idle / 50 load)
2X512 DDR500 CRUCIAL BALLISTIX

Just started building a box with 3800 X2. Put it together in 30 minutes and booted no problem, but when I start to install Win XP it show the drives with 131067 MB available to create a partition on (wrong size).

There are two drives. Both are Seagate 7200.9 - 250 GB on Sata 1, 300 GB on Sata 2. The drives show up fine in the bios (Ver 1011).

Any ideas?

I'm reading through this thread and seeing lot's of issues. If someone could post how to properly install Win XP (not step by step but points like which bios/chip drivers to use, drivers to load on XP install, ideal partition size...).

Here is how I had planned to go about it:
Update Bios 1008 to 1011 (done)
Install Win XP (shows both the Sata drives as 131067 MB available)
Install SP2
Update nForce 4 chipset drivers to 6.70 (which drivers do I skip?)
Install Video Drivers (Sapphire x1600 Pro PCI-E)
Update Windows (all patches)
Install & Update Software

Original XP cannot recognise drives > 137GB. IMO, best way to install is to create a slipstreamed xp sp2 CD. Otherwise AFAIK, once you install sp2, you can use disk management to get at the balance HDD space.
