I have been getting alot of BSOD recently trying to tweak my system to try to get the best performance I can get because of the stupid 1T bug and so every time I get a BSOD it is displayed for only a split second. Is there a setting in the registry where the BSOD can be paused and doesn't show for a split second before rebooting? This way I can know what exactly the problem is,... sort of.
Thx for the info iRONic. On another note I am tryin gto find some links that verify that there is a 1T command rate. I wanna bookmark it for future reference. Anyone have or found any? I couldn't find a thing and don't remember how I found it the first time. Thx

I have BIOS flashed to 1010, but I also saw this behaviour under 1008. I have two SATA-II drives, not RAIDed (and I don't WANT them RAIDed as I dual-boot into Linux).
I see a few symptoms:

I recently bought this MB, along with a Maxtor 300gig Sata2 drive, and a 3700 AMD chip, and a Antec 450 watt power supply, and trying to install XP pro SP2.

Goto the Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager->IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller->NVIDIA nForce4 Serial ATA Controller and disable/uncheck "Enable command queuing". That should fix the freezing during the windows boot screen.
Thanks for the reply, but I cannot even install Windows to get to the control panel. After I format the drive, I cannot get to the next Windows install screen to enter my serial# and complete the setup

Question... I'm considering buying a Thermalright XP-90 Heatsink for my Athlon... Do I need to remove the motherboard from the case to mount it on the A8N-E?
If I do, I'll probably reconsider my choice... I would really like to avoid taking this board out a third time since originally installing it. heh

You might be able to do it with out ripping out the MOBO. You gotta take the plastic frame thingy ( can't remember what its actually called) out that your current HSF is installed to and replace it with the one that comes with the unit. I had to Unscrew the screws that hold down the frame thing when I installed my Zalman CNPS9500 (which is awesome by the way) and was able to do that with out ripping out the MOBO. So yeah you should be able to do it.
Since you are using one hard drive, did you disable raid in the BIOS?
Are you loading the Nvidia disk drivers by pressing F6 at the beginning of the install?
How are you partitioning and formatting the drive?
You say XP2. Does that mean Windows XP svc pack 2?
I have A8N-E MB and i have a problem..... when I OC in bios my settings wont apply in windows except voltages an latency.... i noticed that for around 10sec. there is an OC value but after that its set to default (??)..... sistem is OCed with nTune, cause theres is no way of OCing it in bios except voltages and latency.... did someone have a simular problem... i have 1010 bios version installed......

Don't OC in the bios. Use ClockGen. Goto CPU-Z website and download the right version there.

Just out of curiosity, do you have the 'RTC Resume' set to 'Enabled'? If that isn't set to enabled, any other entered values will be ignored.

I've recently put together a system with the a8n-e,
After a rather difficult time getting my isp to switch over the mac address so that the internet works on the new computer and getting windows installed and upgrading to service pack 2, I set a restore point and install the latest nforce 4 amd drivers from nvidia's site. After the reboot, suddenly my internet is no longer working. I figure maybe another mac address issue, but calling up my isp has them telling me they show me as connected. Sure enough, if I open the command prompt and ping various sites, I get a normal response. When I open outlook and try connecting to the isp's pop mail server, it correctly prompts me for a login and password. Hrm. Opening internet explorer just has it tell me it cannot open the site. Also if I try to change the address in the bar and hit enter, it tells me it "cannot find the search page".
On my current motherboard (msi k8n neo 2 platinum) I recall trying to update my nforce 2 drivers and running into a similar problem, suddenly I wasn't able to connect, and only a system restore fixed it. Interestingly, in this latest case a system restore was not able to fix the problem. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has any idea what's going on, has had this happen to them before, or has any suggestions on what to do. Was debating if maybe it's just a problem with the onboard lan, and if buying an ethernet card would help resolve the issue finally. Thanks in advance for taking the time to help!

Second, like the other thread says, unninstall nVidia firewall and if that's not it, what anti-virus are you running?

I just picked up an Asus A8N-E the other day, and am having a problem with the onboard NIC.
Problem - about 80% of the time, I can't load webpages. SSH sessions freeze when too much text scrolls by. It's not dropping packets, but I have no idea what it IS doing. It's just wrong. This was with a multitude of drivers, in both Linux (nvnet & forcedeth) and Windows. I did disable CRC Offload, to no avail.
So I disabled onboard NIC, installed my known-good trusty DFE530TX. Seemed to work great -- until I started downloading alot of stuff (demos, STEAM downloads, etc). Suddenly 'A network cable has been unplugged', and then instant reconnect. Tried a variety of cables.. Moved the card to different slots. Even went out and bought a new NIC (Linksys LNE100). Same problem. Everytime there's high traffic to/from the card, that error pops up.
Also getting windows bootup freezes.. I did disable command queuing, hoping that would help. Also freezes while navigating BIOS menu. Weird huh?
There are no temperature issues, everything is nice and cool.. memtest clean.. Powersupply should be sufficient.. No overclocking going on...
Is this a defect or what?

No antivirus yet, fresh install of windows. Just uninstall all the nVidia drivers and try starting from scratch unless you're sure the firewall is not installed. In that case, you may have a bum Ethernet port......try a PCI NIC in that case.

You have to take a further step if you're using 3rd party antivirus and/or firewall. Nvidia's NV4 has a (to me) nasty little program which runs by default called "active armor". My system went BSOD continuosly until I shut it down. Go to Nvidia Corp > Network Access Manager to disable it.

It's a good Antec 350W, and it's been running fine for a couple of years with a P4C-800 and P4 2.8Ghz and GF 6800GT (AGP).
I guess the AMD should use less power than the P4, but the 7800 might use more?

I would most definitely get an new PSU 350 probably won't cut it. a 7800 plus a dual core sucks up some power. I grabbed a Neo HE 500 from antec and that is working great. but if you have the money i would pick up a PC power and Colling PSu those things are awesome
