Sorry,

I tried to do a search on this information but the search results are far too many to hunt down the answer. As you can see in the subject title which mobo and CPU I have, ASUS A7V266-E, Althon XP 1800+ with PC2100 512MB RAM (one DIMM.)

The question is what are the settings for a normal CPU for the following BIOS cofiguration.

CPU Speed
CPU System Frequency Multiple
System/PCI Frequency Ratio
CPU Vcore

any others that I should also change?

The auto detect didn't seem to work as it didn't detect it properly. It was showing the first value option for each setting. And I knew it was 11.5 setting that's all. I left it the others as the lowest setting. But it still fried the CPU. The BIOS had the latest version. I only had one hour of looking at the BIOS and setting up the Windows XP.

I don't know the proper voltage and other settings for this CPU. AMD is willing to replace it under warranty but I have a new one on order. I don't want to fry another one. I don't intend to overclock, just normal/recommended settings. I also order the Alpha PAL8045 HSF. Depending how fast the replacement exchange goes, I may return the one I ordered or just kept it as a backup. But once I get it running for a month, there is no need for a second one if I used Alpha 8045 HSF.

I have done many custom builds in the past. But the last one was like 4 years ago. Now I am doing another round of it. Boy a lot has changed since.

Thanks for your help.

Oh, BTW, I have that Antec case with the 300W PS included? Should I invest in an recommended PS? I have the ATI AIW 8500DV.

I used the same mobo & XP 1800+. Mine first automatically set on safe seeting. Which is i think 1100mhz. I set 133mhz bus freq, 11.5 multipler. It works good. Read asus motherboard manual and check setting on board. sometime it is different that what it says in manual(which is default ). because When I check my mobo. for cpu type freq. seeting on mobo. It was set for palomino processr not athlon/duron, Which I changed.
I am still using same BIOS, i have not upgraded bios yet. I buit this machin just 15 days ago.

Okay could you verify it? I know the mobo is set for Athlon/Duron, I checked it. I went from cover to cover in the manual. But nowhere in the manual tells you the settings for each CPU speed. They did provide it online when I bought my ASUS P2B mobo.

I checked the newegg.com order status and I should get my CPU on Thursday afternoon or Friday. I don't want to fry another weekend of going no computer especially I don't have money for it!

What is your voltage set at?

My VCore is 1.872,(I just checked in ASUS probe). THis is the first computer I build, therefor I Will try to as much as I can, and understand , i provide info.
For about CPU speed, according to my mannual, you have to check 4.4 Advanced menu(4. bios setup, where u will see cpu speed, cpu system freq multiple(mine 11.5),system /pci freq(133.33) etc. to setup(this is all if board is set up for jumperfree bios).

Befor all that, make sure your mobo is set to jumperfree. In mannual, 3. 4 Motherboard seeting(page 18).

I have about the same setup as you.
Asus A7V266-E and 1800+, yea be sure to have Athlon/Duron jumper set. All you really need do is pop the cpu in and it wil lrun and first boot @ lowest clock 1.1Ghz.

I've got the AIW 8500DV also don't fry this card be careful a friend of mine did.
Let me know what other info you need.
But yes alot of reading the manual will help. I had those questions to ask too. Just set most things on Auto and if you needem' they will run. As for the CPU Auto will recognize the CPU specs for ya!:Q

I fried CPU #2 with Alpha8045 HSF using ArticSilver2. I followed the manual. Two jumpers I noticed were differnt from the manual so I changed it.

One is PALO_FREQ. It was set to Palomino instead of Althon/Duron. I changed it to default as I have Althon 1800+.

The other is I/O Voltage setting. It was set to 2.8V instead of the default which is 2.65V. So I changed it.

Now I watched the CPU temp in the BIOS and the temp when up to 43 degrees C average for about an hour. Of course that was idle time. I then went ahead and installed Windows2000. When the CD is done, the last screen of the install was saying to remove the CD and then reboot to finalize installation. That was it. I rebooted and got the same symptoms as when the first one fried.

What did I do wrong here? I know there are many of us here with the same CPU and mobo (and other forums too) Those people are running just fine while I am frying CPUs. The mobo is a second one. When I fried the first one, I exchanged it. Now the CPU fries, I don't think the mobo is the problem this time. There is something else like jumper or voltage setting that I missed twice causing it to fry.

The hardware is CD-ROM, CD-RW, two hard drives, floppy, NIC and AIW8500DV.

The problem is that I can't watch the temps under load like when I was installing Windows.

Your Athlon 1800+ is a palomino, not an older generation T-bird, so make sure to set the jumper correctly.

All Athlon XPs use the Palomino core.

Thanks Migroo. No kiddin' How is a dummy like me suppose to know? It needs to be documented better. I will try it when I get the replacements. I shipped two CPUs today with RMA#. I will change the jumper when I get it back.

What about the I/O voltage? Any other stupidities I should know about?

I will post my results when I get the back which is a few weeks from now. One is to AMD for the boxed (retail) exchange and the other is to newegg.com for the OEM exchange.

Whoa whoa xp processors aren't palomino core that was one of the whole campaign for the xp's the athlon core.....this is straight off the amd site...........................

Featuring QuantiSpeed? Architecture for Rapid Execution of Applications
QuantiSpeed architecture, the latest technological enhancement to the award-winning AMD Athlon processor core, provides for extra performance in the cutting-edge features users need most. At the heart of QuantiSpeed architecture is a nine-issue, superscalar, fully-pipelined core. This provides more pathways to feed application instructions into the execution engines of the core, simply allowing the processor to complete more work in a given clock cycle. Additional features of QuantiSpeed architecture include a superscalar, fully-pipelined floating point engine, hardware data prefetch, and exclusive, speculative Translation Look-aside Buffers (TLBs). Combined, these features help boost overall productivity and allow a system to boot and load applications quickly. In the end, users will enjoy an effortless computing experience.

keep the athlon setting i have a a7v266 as well and a 1700xp+ i am still working out the kinks been workin a lot but i have with just a few bios settings min up from the ship speed 1466 to 1640 and running about 50c

When you installed your 8045 did you use the plastic washers with the shoulders?
If you did then the CPU fried because the heatsink doesnt hit the core
you also have to be sure the screws are bottomed out as the springs keep the correct pressure on the cpu

if you did the above ignore this

Also reset your jumpers for default (jumperfree) and burn your new cpu in
