Hello and thanks ahead of time,

I have recently put together a new system with the asus a7v133 200/266 fsb agp 4x, 1 ghz thunderbird chip, inno3d tornado geforce 2 mx, 256 PC133 case 2 ram(1 dim Kingmax), 45 gb IBM ata100 hd, fong kai case, 300 watt athalon approved powersupply, creative x-gamer live sound blaster, and D-link 10/100 nic card.

Ok, that being said, here is the problem.

Everything was fine for about 2 weeks, no problems at all. I could play q3, counter strike, and all sorts of other games just fine. I was playing one of my older games, Ultima Ascention, a direct3d game, and I started to get real slow game play, the fps dropping below 15 fps on medium detail. The game started crashing on large pallet swaps. I would get errors such as "failure to load bla bla bal" and the game would crash. Eventually, it progressed to my computer getting oe erros and vxd erros such as eo 0167:bff9dff, or explorer caused instruction in module GDI.exe at 0001:0000zce6 when the computer would startup. This would be peppered with the occasional multiple bootups with registry erros and having to restart right away.

Solution :format and reinstall os

After fdisking and formatting(yes i moved hd to ide slot from ata100), I could not even install the 98se. I would get the misclaneous erros but the most consistant was suwin erros when it tried to start copying files from my cdrom. I would use my 98 startup disk with cdrom support to get setup going.

I started to troubleshoot with my other computer, testing the ram(it was fine), HD (also fine), and video card(also ok). I tried updating the motherboard bios to ***2a, still the same erros. I was finally able to get 98se installed when I took out all of my pci card and replaced my geforce2mx card with an old creative banchee agp video card. I then placed in each component, starting with sound card and ending with video card, into the computer and got no errors(thus far) with windows. The only issus i have thus far with the new installation, is that whenever i try to use the newest nvidia reference drivers, I get a quick flicker in win98 bootup screen, and then a very quick blue screen(so fast that you can only see the blue on the corners of the moniter) just before the desktop loads. If I use the OEM drivers that came with my video card, then neither of the two events happen. However, if I use Inno3d's updated drivers, I get the same bootup events as when I use the newest(6.XX) Nvidia drivers.

So why, you may ask, am I sending this post? Well, because my computer is not performing to its peak efficentcy(sp?). My computer, with the above settings, gets a lowly 3401 3DMark2k score with a cpu score of 206. Most people with similar setups (1ghz thunderbird, mx card, and 256 mb ram) get scores up into 6000 with cpu scores around 500.

Any one have any ideas as to what the problem could be? I have been banging my head against my computer for 3 days now trying to first get an os installed on it, and then trying to get my performance up to where it should be. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE
I have heard that you need 4 in 1 via drivers for optimal compatability, I will try it.

ANy other ideas?

I have the earlier a7v. I was having all kinds of problems until I installed the latest 4in1 Drivers. Seems to work fine now.
