Ok, here is the problem I?m having. I just upgraded from a K6-2 550mhz and of course had to get a new ATX style case and the ASUS MB. Like any system upgrade dealing with the MB you should always format the hard drive, I did this and went though a clean install of Win98 "NOT SR2" I get my video card and sound card installed with no problems. It's my NIC card and the modem I?m using that?s giving me the problems. Win98 will detect the NIC card and I can install the drivers for it. But after I restart my computer my NIC card locks my system up on boot, "when its at the windows 98 screen" when it activates on boot "turns on and off to look for a network connection". So I have to restart my computer and go into safe mode to deactivate or remove it completely otherwise my system will not boot with it installed. I?ve come to the conclusion that I?m going to need to get a newer revision of my NIC card sense this one is over 2 years old now.

As for the modem issue, it just won?t work. Whenever I install the drivers for this modem and tell to set onto COM2 and install it properly just like you would any other modem it will not respond. "Windows can?t even detect it automatically" sense the modem is not activating with any of the COM ports and just will not work, period. Its like it?s turned off and will not turn on. This is not my modem, it?s a friends, and as far as they know it works just fine. I believe I?m going to have to go buy a new modem that?s PCI, although I don?t want to do this sense most PCI modems are software based and I don?t want to go off and spent the 200$ to get a decent modem.

I Just downloaded the new BIOS "1005b" from a Dutch site "only place I could find it" and the new 4in1 VIA driver group from a VIA tech site. "1.46 beta / or something like that? Will the new bios and 4in1 driver update help me? I hope so. Everything else works perfectly on my new system, I?m just having problems with my network devices and this MB. Please anyone that has had this experience before or anyone that can help please do. It's very annoying to not be able to get online in anyway except from work.

First of all take your Diamond SupraMax v.90 modem off PCI 5. Leave PCI 5 opened. Never use 4/5. Then try it. Always use PCI1 2 3 never4/5. I would put the Lan card on PCI3. The modem on 2. It should work correctly after that.

If you get the chance upgrade your bios to 1005C

I know where ssteele is getting with his advice for not using PCI slots 4 and 5, however that was true of the older BX chipset and it's limitations!

The newer VIA and Intel chipsets allow for more PCI connections and less IRQ sharing than the older BX did!

About your problem, try booting with the minimum devices connected and one-by-one re-connecting them until you find the culprit!

Or go back to the previous BIOS rev if it worked well for you!

Disable Com 1 and Com 2 in Bios. Try setting the IRQs manually. On mine I print thru the Network so I disable LPT1 as well.
I use the following
IRQ 1 = 11
IRQ2 = 5
IRQ3 = 10
IRQ4 = 3
My set up is as follows with 1003 hacked BIOS
AGP
PCI1 - free (blocked anyway)
PCI2 - ATI TV Wonder
PCI3 - SBPCI128
PCI4 - NIC
PCI5 - Vodoo3 3000 PCI

I have my modem and NIC in 4/5 and it is just fine. SLot 2 shares with the promise controller which has proven to be uncooperative with many devices. I'd try slot 1 before 2 myself.

I suspect the issue is lack of IRq's Disable com1 and com2 in your bios to free up 2 irq's as mentioned. I had the same problem and this resolved it for me.

I recommend you also go into bios and assign an irq to each slot you have occupied and set Plug and play OS to NO. You might have to try your parallel port on irq 5 or 7 to find that happy spot as well. Mine prefers irq 7.

Try a newer bios. I am using 1005c and the only issue I have with it is the idle temp with my Duron. With 1003 and 1004 I had a random problem with boot up. It would loop a few times before finally booting. I would turn it on and come back to scandisk on display. It is likely an IRQ or resource fight, but I got tired of rearranging and it only happened maybe every couple weeks. 1005c seems to have solved it. We shall see.

Good luck.
