I have an ASUS A7N8X2.0 Deluxe Motherboard with BIOS Rev 1007, which I started with 512mb of ram in dual channel mode (2x256), now comes the time when id like to bump up the memory to 1 gig. My question is; having 2 x 256 and 1 x 512, can i still use dual channel? eg. 2 x 256 in the 1st channel and the 512 in the 2nd channel.

256 256 + 512

has anyone tried this? does it work? :)

thanks

Many MB's/Chipsets limit the dual channel option to only two slots at a time, and as soon as any size DIMM goes in the third slot, you don't have the dual channel memory access. In order to have a megabyte and be dual channelled, you probably need two 512's, but surely your MB manual covers the subject. If you've lost it, I'm sure I've seen Asus MB manuals listed as downloads from their web site!

I have more than one A7N8X-E Deluxe. Not quite your version, but close enough.

Indeed 2x256 in one channel and 1x512 in the other works fine.

I've done this with 2x256MB Mushkin PC3500 Level 1 and 1x 512MB OCZ PC2700 2-2-2 v3.2 running at 205 MHz FSB at 2-3-2 and with 2x256MB Kingmax PC3500 and 1x 512MB PC2700 Kingston Value RAM running at 205 FSB at 2.5-3-2.

Both report Dual channel on boot and Sandra bandwidth tests indicate that dual channel is being used.

2 x 256 on one side and 512 on the other will work fine for the A7N8X in Dual channel. Even if it didn't the extra 512 is worth much more than dual channel.
