just to confirm is the drive a sata II/300 HDD and the board your hooking it upto has sata I/150 controler if so you may need to set a jumper on the drive to enable it to run under sata I/150 i have to do this with my two sata drives in raid 0 both are sata II/300 but the nForce 2 u400 board i have only has sata I/150 actually after doin a quick search of asus's web site you hav exactly the same problem the siI 3112 is sata I/150 your Hdd is sata II/300 check hdd manufactures website for the jumper settin on your hdd description/specs page
Nice catch, man.. yeah, the II/300 HD's jumper needs to be set for I/150 and it is. It was working before I RMA'd the MB for a different reason. I have tried two other HDs besides the one installed, comp will not boot into DOS or Windows with any of them...
BTW, the sata controller is a Silicon Image 3112A, BIOS v4.2.47
I have ordered a cheap PCI sata controller bc this is a water cooled system and I just do not feel like pulling the MB out again for RMAing

But I would still love to figure this thing out, although I am starting to sense that Asus may have sent my a cursed board.
