Asus A7n8x-Deluxe onboard sound problem

When ever I do something that is processor intensive, like unrar a file, when I play mp3s the sound starts to crackle. I've tried several programs, including winamp and sonique and I get the same problem. When the computer is doing nothing else or doing something not intensive, like surfing the web, the sound is fine. I've tried Nvidia and Asus nForce drivers and the problem just doesn't go away. Any ideas?

Have you gone into System Tools>System information and see if there are any conflicts with the other devices you might have?

sorry if i am repeating anything you know but this is a known problem with this chipset and well posted about at nforcershq.com; i thought it was limited to our board but other makes report similar prob; what revision have you got as annecdotally it seems more common with rev 1.04 not rev2

multiple solutions suggested but the one that seems to work involves a reinstall i'm afraid as you have to turn off APIC in bios and THEN install winxp; if you just disable it now it will stay on without the reinstall

before yo do this however, some people also reported success with setting their PC profile as ACPI instead of uniprocessor; to be honest i dont know how to do this as i could see how on a quick look and gave up when i [so far

] my sound is okay.

it seems nvidia blame some tweaks asus made to the soundstorm chip but asus are strangely silent on the matter! also for the same reason [the tweaks] i understand that it is preferable yto use the asus drivers as they have been tweaked to match....

let me know how you get on but do check the sound section of the nforcers site; it gave me a cold sweat when i was research for my build a couple of months back!

This problem occurs on most nForce2 boards. As wigwam said, go checkout the forums at nforcershq.com. I have the problem with an Asus A7N8X deluxe rev. 2.0. The problems happens most often with my kids games (Barbie Repunzel, Pajama Sam, etc). Restarting the game fixes the problem 95% of the time, so it is obviously a driver problem. I wait with baited breathe for a driver update (Current drivers are still the Jan 2003 versions). There were some more recent drivers released, but nVidia pulled them back... no idea why.

I have the revision 2 version of the motherboard. For me the problem goes away is if i restart the audio program or wait to play the music when the computer isnt doing anything intensive.

you can do that by going to the device manager, go to computer, selected uniprocessor, click update driver, say that you'll chose ur own driver, and choose Advanced configuration and power interface (ACPI) PC.

I don't want to do this cause I'm kinda scared 😱

has anyone had sucess doing this?

my understanding is that of all the fixes, this is the most painless...and eminently reversible if it doesnt do any good.
many poster who did it said it also seemed to make their system seem quicker [dont know why it would though!]
