Asus A7N8x and ethernet (not working???)

I have the before mentioned mobo I have just installed and win xp pro recognizes both ethernet ports but when I plug in rj45 I get nothing. I have stuck my NIC card in also and it works just fine. I have been told this is the place to go for networking answers. I sure hope someone here can help me out because I am at my wits end. ( I do not want the PCI NIC in the puter just for the sake of principle). Any suggestions? Thanks...
