Hey, I am building a new computer, using an asus a7a266 motherboard, with DDR Ram from crucial and a 1.33 amd athlon. I put in the processor, ram and video card and gave it some power while hooking it up to a key board and a monitor, just to make sure it worked from there. It checked the processor, then the ram and then i saw at the bottom 'Hit delete to enter setup', but it never did anything, it just frooze. I restarted and nothing would come up on the monitor. I turned off the power supply, and the turned it back on (just the power supply, not hitting the power button on the case) and the fan on the processor would come on, too. Again, nothing would come on the monitor either. I tried a different power supply and different video card but always the same results.

In looking back to try to find any other possibilities, I did have a bit more trouble getting the ram in than I thought I would (just had to push a little harder than I thought I would, but it seemed to be fine once it was in, and came out easy).

However, now the retailer has shipped me a new motherboard, though, and I am curious did I mess up the other one, or is there something i need to do to make sure this does not happen again? I tried with just the processor and video card, thinking i could still get to the bios without RAM, but still nothing comes up on the monitor (and when i turn on the power supply the fan on top of the heatsink starts to go, too.) Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

How many DDR DIMMs are you running? If you are running both at 133/266MHz, you need to change the position of the unmarked jumper located at the end of the AGP Pro slot.

I have two sticks of 256 DDR. I see the unmarked jumper next to the AGP card, but I can't find anything on it in the motherboard manual. Currrently the two pins next to the AGP slot are covered. Do I need to switch this?

Thanks

OH so thats what the undocumented jumper is for. I have that board and I have two sticks of ram 256 and 128 ddr installed but I dint change any jumpers.

I was just going to post on that jumper topic. Is it possible that when I run the sandra memory benchmark I am locking up because I didnt move the jumper or would my machine never boot up if the jumper was in wrong?

Apparently that jumper is set for one DIMM if you move the jumper then TWO DIMMS will work. I heard it had to do with the voltage. You could do a search for that post for the exact reason behind the jumper.

So probably your other board would have worked if you had known about the jumper.

so with 2 sticks of 256 DDR 184-pin DIMM RAM, that jumper by the AGP card should be on the two pins furthest away from the AGP card, rather than the two closest to the AGP card?

Just want to make sure, thanks a lot

Im getting lockups every now and again with my a7a266 and 1.33 gig thunderbird. I have 2 sticks of ram 256 and 128 both mushkin 2.5 cas delay. I hear of this talk about an undocumented jumper near the agp port. If I enable this jumper will it cure my random, lockups?:p;)
what does it do ? does it reduce the voltage to ddr ram chips?
