It seem the 5870 2gb matrix is louder then the gtx 480 at load.

http://techreport.com/articles.x/18682/13

Funny they have the gtx480 as 49.9 DBa with a open case at 8 inches away.

http://techreport.com/articles.x/18682/13

I linked in another thread that the gtx 480 in a closed case from 30 inches away was 45 DBa.

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2063264

From guru 3d a supposed Nvidia fanboy site.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforc...-480-review/13

This seems to back up that claim.

Let me guess this site is Nvidia biased too right?

Perhaps the other sites didn't tell you they put the mic right in front of the exaust port?

***happy medium puts on Ati flameboy suit******:)

Where is the head to head comparsion of ASUS Matrix HD5870 2GB vs 480 GTX? I don't even see a Matrix 5870 2Gb listed in that first link you gave?

Look the difference here is that if you want a 5870 you don't have to get the matrix but if you want a 480 unless you get the real expensive watercooled one you are going to get the dustbuster. You can't compare some extreme cooling on a special edition card to the reference cooling on another card.

Why not compare the noise from one of those triple fan aftermarket coolers at 100% fan speed while we are at it. Never mind that even at crazy overclocks the fans would never run at 100%.

I wasn't comparing ,the review was and I posted it.

But I did connect there stock 5870 number with there gtx 480 numbers and seen they both came up much less loud.

Like I said , why all the different methods of reviewing sound?

Personally I want to hear all these cards playing a game for 5 minutes and measured from resonable distance from a closed case.
Not with a microphone stuffed in front of the exaust vent.

Thats all Im saying, some kind of standard.
It's like running benchmarks without giving a resolution or driver version.

Who know how all these sites tested?
Most just say we have a sound instument and tested for db's?
No detail at all,and the ones who gave detail, closed case and how many inches from the case seem to be less loud.

I hate to say it but this makes sense.
With most of my graphics cards I never need 100,80 or even 70% fan speed.
And my temps are not much different at 60% speed to 100%, but the NOISE is!
My 5750 at 100% is very loud even though its 3/4 feet away in my large case with 7 other fans.

How....Bet you never thought you'd agree with tweakboy :)

Ya know I did listen to the video's and my conclusion is furmark makes the 5850,5870,gtx 470,gtx 480,5970 all too loud at 100%.
Personally I think they are all very loud at 100%.
Whats another 5db's when you allready at 55?

Idk, decibel system is logarithmic. Go set your stereo to loud then turn it up 5 more Db and see if your mom complains.

Maybe Nvidia should start measuring their noise levels in SPL's instead. lol

Well, I have a JBL 7.1 surround system with dual 10 inch subs hooked to a Marantz 1000 watt amp for gaming. And my mommy don't live here, thank god. :D

I would say its the equivelent of trying to talk over someone. Not yelling!

Like having a video card that goes all the way to 11 :)

Happy Medium,

Nvidia did an awesome job designing their air cooler. (The remove-able shroud is nice also).

Maybe ASUS and some of these other 3rd party makers should take some cues from them. (Slot in the PCB underneath the fan included)

Dude, that link doenst link to a review of the matrix.

anyway, asus mars is louder than gtx480
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_480_Fermi/31.html

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/GeForce_GTX_285_MARS/28.html

see I can do that too. Honestly you cant compare the two.
One is a custom card DESIGNED for OCing and the other is a reference design.
Even if you did compare them, the matrix would run cooler, so its noisy and cool.
Rather than noisy AND hot.

Try this one.....

http://techreport.com/articles.x/18682/13

They compare a gtx 480,470, 5870 and 5870 matrix in all test. Not a bad review.

edit: and your right it was 10c less under load.

I would hope the board partners design some thing better. Not with one small fan spinning at 4000 rpm's! I like the heatpipes though. Looks like a old Corvette with sidepipes!

Well yeah, I think if noise wasn't becoming an issue at this level issue Nvidia would have made lower temps the target.

4890 was a noisey card also, but load temps were in the high 70's.

High 70's? no more like the high 80's, depending on the card.
Hence the reason for the loud fan later on that everyone complains about.

I would wait for some official Asus Matrix 2gb reviews before jumping into conclusions....It could even be a typo..We need to wait for some other sites to conduct some reviews. I'm not at all impressed by the near equal performance to a stock 5870 1GB card however...I guess the 2gb doesn't really give much of a benefit after all..

Aren't we beginning to see wider PCB designs now?

MSI HD5870 Lightning comes to mind, but I am not sure if fan diameter is increased.

I have a 12cm fan on top of my case thats quiet, wonder if that would work? J/K

Well, 3 larger lower rmp fans comes to mind for me with heat pipes.
But that might bring power usage over 300 watts.

I had a Accelo cooler on my 8800gt with a low rpm 120mm fan attached (with wire ties :D). Quietest thing in my case and very ,very cool.

Kinda sucks but with all these next generation cards a person pretty much needs to go water cooling.

I don't know about you guys but if I turn the fan up on my 5850 to even 70% it makes my ears wanna bleed.
