More bullshit from the bullshitter.

HD4830 using less power than the 9800GT and ~40W less than the HD4850

GTS250 only using ~5W less than the HD4850:

HD4830 using less power than the 9600GT, 9600GSO, 9800GT, and HD4850.

MSI HD4830 (204W) vs. Sapphire HD4850 (264W):

Various GTS250s (271W, 292W) using more power than the HIS HD4850 (254W):

And for consistency, this PowerColor HD4830 (257W) vs. HIS HD4850 (254W) (the same HIS HD4850 as in the GTS250 review):

And finally a test with both the HD4830 and GTS250:

Ok, I know you didn't ask for this so feel free to skip this post, belittle me, kick my dog, etc.

$58 A64 5400+ (2.8GHz dual core) 65 watt processor. Your CPU is pretty weak for modern games, I kind of glanced past that in my earlier suggestions. You'll really want to overclock if that's your thing or upgrade there.

Add a cheap card like a 4830 and enjoy and still be around budget. :)

Now of course if you don't mind overclocking and can get your CPU up to a better speed, than that's an even better idea as you save a few bucks.

That shows the 4830 using more power than a 4850

Which is still less than the (edit: EITHER) GTS250.

You are incredibly dense. I hope I don't have to explain what numbers mean.

It's only a 5w difference. Also, I'm not sure how they isolated the card power draw but the 2 testbeds are different.

They were able to replicate the same numbers for the 4850 between tests. The GTS250 is faster than the 4830 or even the 4850.

OR they reused the numbers from previous benches...look at it they got the EXACT same numbers to a decimal place? That's very hard to believe. Again I don't know how they isolate the video card from the system but would like to know so if you have some links I'd appreciate it if you post them (I'm curious as to how they do it). Maybe their setup is that accurate. I don't know.

I didn't mention anything about performance. No need to prove anything to ME.

EDIT: Googling, it seems xbitlabs may actually mod their testbeds to find power draw of the individual components. I'm not sure what they exactly do though.

I'm not an EE so I don't know the accuracy of this method.

Not a bad idea. I still have ~$50 to spend. Instead of buying some random games, maybe i should shoot for that processor. I'll look into OC'ing my current first. thanks :)

The HD4830 is not a bad idea - you just need to move a few sliders in the driver to get HD4850-like performance. There is supposed to be an announcement next week about new cards coming out at the $100 price point. I would wait to see what this brings - possibly fast cards that use low power, so you can get near HD4870 speeds at lower power.

Are you talking about RV740? That won't be out until May apparently.

With HD4770 being released sometime early May, maybe this can be considered as another possible option at this point in time.
