For a crossfire setup do both cards have to be by the same manufacturer (wondering if I can pair this with my Visiontek HD4850)

Don't have to be from the same manufacturer.

will this be a significant upgrade from a 8800GT?

Yes, depending on the resolution you play at.

I'm not liking how this card lacks cooling on the VRM's, but for $99 it's a steal.

I guess with the money one saves one can purchase some inexpensive heatsinks for the VRM's, yes?

yuo can put hs's on the vrm's if u want, but the hs on the gpu covers the mem, so no hs's there... but i have no report of overheating on the pc i put one of these in... i upped the fan to 50% and it's still quiet enough and stays reasonably cool...

do these overclock? i have a 1080p lcd and id be tempted to get this if i could oc it just a little, especially since i have a 10% off code from newegg (are those really tied to just one account?), else ill hold out for a 4870

ne reviewers are not exactly known for their brainpower...

Are you kidding? They know what they're talking about. They rated their technical experience level as "moderate to high", lol.

What gets me is the kids/people who write "very high/expert" and then say stupid things like how great their DDR2 ram is with their Core i7.

I agree about the general experience level of reviewers, but you don't need to be a genius to report blue screening, doa, overheating, and not getting your rebate.

EDIT: in my reviews I always select "somewhat high" 😉

and they sure aren't geniuses, that's for sure... everyone is master oc'er, they all know how to stuff a bunch of crap in a box and say they have good ventilation...

In my opinion, no

its a little bit faster than the 8800 but overall not worth the upgrade unless thers something wrong with your 8800

my kids say they seem to do 4xaa on a bunch of games where the 8800gt won't... and they seem to be noticeably smoother in newer games...

but 2 8800gt's is noticeably better than a 4850... i doubled up my 8800gt's when i added a couple 4850's to the stable...
