Asteroid could hit Mars in January

Can you imagine the global freakout that would be occurring if there was a 1-in-75 chance of an asteroid hitting earth instead of Mars? People would be stockpiling weapons already.

Earth is about zero parsecs in diameter, Mars is about zero parsecs in diameter. They're about the same size.

Why don't they know for sure whether or not it will hit? Can't they model the trajectory accurately enough to know if it will hit or not? Especially if the impact date is just a little more than a month away.
